Standing up, my chair falls back to the ground. “I don’t want to come back here!”

My mother glances nervously at my father, playing with her pearl necklace. “Elena, I can’t imagine you want to stay with bikers. We promised them Katerina, and now we can make good on that promise.”

“This is bullshit.” I slam my hands down on the table.

Suit and my father stand at the same time. My sister’s hand finally falls from his. My father grips my wrist. Hard. “You’ll do as you’re damn well told, Elena. Don’t embarrass me. Your sister will go with Suit. You will come back home.”

“No, I won’t. And you can’t make me.”

Not this time.

My father lifts his palm like he’s going to backhand me.

“Take your fucking hands off my wife,” Suit growls, his palm landing on my lower back. “Don’t think I didn’t notice the bruises she had on her on our wedding day. This is the last time you will ever fucking touch her.”

My father’s hand drops. “She is my daughter.”

“She is my wife,” Suit repeats, his tone dark and lethal. Something possessive breaks through his perfect mask, his slate-gray eyes like storm clouds. “If you want to put hands on someone, why don’t you try someone more your size? I will happily put you in your place.”

My father looks like he’s about to explode.

“And this is the last time we will be coming here in person.”

He links his hand with mine and gets me out of there.

“Wait, so you aren’t taking me with you?” Katerina calls out.

She’s still in shock that someone didn’t jump at the chance to be with her.

The drive home is quiet and tense. Suit calls Prez and recaps the dinner. It’s over the Bluetooth speaker, so I get to hear the conversation for once.

“Why would he want to swap the sisters now?” Prez asks. “It makes no sense.”

“I don’t know. I don’t think he ever wanted to give us Elena because she helps the Bratva so much. But when Katerina ran, he didn’t have a choice. But with her back now, he’s trying to make it right.”

“Church when you get back.”

“Yep. I’ll be there soon.”

They end the call, but Suit is still seething. His jaw is tight, and the air in the car is so thick that I struggle to breathe.

I notice the men in the mirror on their motorcycles riding behind us in formation. They come forward like a protective barrier. I forgot they were all coming to make sure nothing went wrong tonight.

We don’t speak until we get back to the clubhouse parking lot.

“Are you okay?” he finally asks as I undo my seat belt to get out. His fingers are still squeezing the life out of the steering wheel.

“Wonderful,” I reply in a dry tone. “My sister was flirting with my husband. Oh, and my father wants to give my husband to my sister and take me back so I can be of use to the Bratva again.”

“Princess—”

“Don’t you princess me, Suit. You let her flirt with you. You even flirted back! And you let her touch you!”

“I didn’t flirt back—”

“You didn’t stop her or any of them. You didn’t even tell my father that you wanted to remain married to me. Do you want to swap me for her? That’s what you originally wanted, wasn’t it? Maybe you haven’t changed your mind.”

He reaches out for me. “Elena, listen to me…”
