I look at him through the mirror while I fasten the second earring.

He’s standing behind me, dressed impeccably as usual, watching me get ready as if I haven’t explained today’s plans three times.

“You’re not coming.”

“Why?”

“Because Bianca and I are doing girl things.”

“I can do girl things.”

I give him a look over my shoulder. “We’re getting our hair done, getting our nails done, and having lunch so she can demand every detail of my life that she missed while I was in Florida.”

“I eat lunch.”

“Congratulations.”

His eyes narrow slightly.

I smile. “You would hate every second of it.”

“I wouldn’t.”

“You would sit there looking terrifying until no one spoke freely.”

“You speak freely around me.”

“I’m brave.”

That earns me the quiet amusement I was aiming for. He steps closer and moves my hair away from my shoulder, letting the ends slide through his fingers.

“Getting your hair done?” he asks.

“That is generally what people have done at a hair salon.”

His gaze lifts to mine in the mirror. “What are you doing to it?”

“I haven’t decided.”

His hand remains around the ends. “Decide.”

I laugh. “Maybe I’ll cut it.”

His brows pull together.

“It needs a trim.”

“A trim,” he repeats carefully.

“Probably.”

His eyes narrow. “Elena.”

I fight a smile. “Don’t look at me like that. I said maybe.”

His fingers move higher, gathering more of my hair as though he can protect it by holding on.

“How much?”
