He moves it and I smile.

“Perfect.”

I turn toward the next section of the garden before he can complain.

The afternoon is warm, but not unbearable. Sunlight filters through the trees surrounding the back of the estate, catching against the leaves and the flowers already planted along the stone paths.

I missed this house.

Florida was beautiful. And now that Evelyn St. Clair has put an office there—and possibly my name beside hers—it no longer feels like somewhere we only ran away to.

But walking back into this place felt different.

It felt like coming home.

I crouch beside one of the beds and point toward an empty space near the edge.

“Something purple there.”

“We already have purple there, ma’am.”

I look at the gardener. “Yes.”

He waits. “So you want more?”

“Obviously.”

A voice comes from behind me.

“Everything good, Miss Amato?”

I turn.

Rodrigo is standing several yards away, scanning the garden instead of looking directly at me.

One hand rests near his jacket.

“Oh my God!”

His attention snaps to me. “What?”

“You people are exhausting.”

His expression doesn’t change.

“I’m fine.”

“Just doing my job.”

I narrow my eyes. “I am inside a gated estate surrounded by armed men. I’m fine!”

Rodrigo remains completely unmoved.

Luciano hires deeply irritating people.

A voice crackles loudly from the radio clipped near Rodrigo’s shoulder.

“Dario and Miguel are secure.”
