Something darker remains suspended inside it.
A thin piece of red-stained fabric, sealed permanently beneath the surface.
No one else will ever know what it is.
I will.
I turn the ring slowly between my fingers, examining the gold, the resin, the small piece of one night preserved inside it.
Perfect.
I return it to the box and close the lid.
My phone rings.
Rafael.
I answer. “What?”
“We have a breach.”
My hand stills over the box. “Say more words.”
“The rumor is that one or more of the new men were sent by Arsen. I checked everyone with me. They’re clean. You need to check yours.”
Mine.
Dario. Miguel.
Both are at the estate.
With Elena.
I leave the box on my desk and move for the door while dialing Rodrigo.
He answers immediately. “Boss.”
“Where’s Elena?”
“In the garden.”
“Is she secure?”
“Yes. We’ve kept our distance like you asked, but she’s good.”
“Check on her first. Then get Dario and Miguel.”
A brief silence. “Both?”
“Both. Hold them for me. Neither one gets near Elena.”
“Understood.”
I end the call and enter the private elevator.
Fifteen minutes.
I’m fifteen fucking minutes away.
