“I do too.” She studies me. “But you and I should have several more conversations before either of us starts ordering stationery.”

“Yes. Absolutely.”

“Your designs are lovely. You appear to understand structure, and you have enough personality on the page that I don’t feel as though I’m looking at something assembled by a committee.” Her hand settles over my portfolio. “Mr. Castillo told me about your ideas. I’m interested.”

Luciano told Evelyn St. Clair about my ideas.

“I’m looking for a fresh perspective on my winter collection,” she continues. “I’ll send you the current designs. You’ll tell me what you think.”

“You want my opinion?”

“I generally prefer collaborators who have opinions.”

“I have many.”

“I suspected that.”

A laugh escapes me before I can stop it.

Evelyn’s eyes brighten.

“Good. Send me several companion designs. If they fit, perhaps we add part of your collection. Then we discuss Florida.”

“I would love that.” The words tumble out too quickly. “Thank you. Seriously. This is an incredible opportunity.”

“I think so too.”

She slides my portfolio toward me.

“All right. You can go.”

“Oh.”

I guess the meeting is over.

“Right. Okay.”

I collect the portfolio and stand.

“Should I give you my number? Or my email? I can write everything down.”

“I have it.”

“You do?”

“I’ll contact your people.”

My people.

“Mr. Castillo said there was a young woman who handles your schedule. Valentina.”

I stare at her.

I do not have an assistant.

Valentina is absolutely not my assistant.

“Right,” I say carefully. “Yes. Valentina.”
