This is the house where Elena learned that everyone else had the right to decide where she belonged. Her brothers inherited homes, businesses, responsibilities. She was given plans.

An apartment.

A degree.

A husband she hasn’t chosen.

Now Angelo wants to remove her from the first place she decided to stay.

I knock once on his office door and enter when he answers.

Angelo sits behind his desk, paperwork spread in front of him as though this conversation is an interruption neither of us has time for.

“Amato.”

I close the door and sit across from him.

“Elena is staying with me.”

“No.”

“Good. We’ve established your position.”

His eyes narrow. “Adriana made a mistake.”

“That’s a dangerous sentence for a man married to Adriana.”

“She put my sister in your house.”

“And your sister decided to remain there.”

“She wasn’t supposed to move in.”

“She put her shoes in my closet. The distinction seems irrelevant now.”

Angelo leans back in his chair.

“Nico is still picking her up.”
