He pressed the back of his hand to my forehead and cursed. “You are a little warm.”

“What do you want me to do, boss?”

“Go get the car. We’re taking her to the hospital.”

Inside, I was writhing and cursing. This was going too far. I was now going to be admitted to the hospital to help hide my affair because I almost got busted.

Then again, it could be worse. I could be going to the morgue, instead.

“Right.”

“Wait!” He snapped his fingers, stopping him. “You can’t go, you have to stay here for Rick. Get Frank to pull the SUV around. He’ll take us.”

“Got it.”

Without even looking at me, he ran from the room, acting just as flustered and concerned as Milo. Goddamn, we were good liars. We should take this act to Hollywood.

He shushed me and helped me to my feet, leading me to the bedroom and setting me on the edge of the mattress. Jogging for the closet, he came back with a simple dress that buttoned down the front to my ankles.

“What’s wrong?”

I decided to tell him the truth with, “I feel like I’m going to throw up. I feel sick. My heart…” I waved my fingers in front of my chest, trying to take a deep breath. “I can’t…breathe…”

Everything I was saying was true, not because I was sick, but because I just saw my life flash before my eyes. What the hell was Milo doing home? He should already be in the city, he left over an hour ago. He had never – never – come back after leaving in the morning.

“Shit.”

He helped me put the dress on then put a basic pair of sandals on my feet. Holding my hand, he helped me stand and pressed a kiss to my temple while leading me out the room.

“There’s a virus going around,” I whimpered, knowing the doctors weren’t going to find anything wrong. “A couple girls at Wanderlust have been out this week because of it.”

“Maybe you caught it.”

A small sob broke free of my chest, tears spilling down my cheeks. That was too close, too goddamn close! The windows of the sunroom could be seen from the driveway. Had Wyatt not moved me away when he had, Milo would have pulled up and seen me in his arms. That was a careless move on our part. We were better at this than that! How could we be so stupid?

“Hey, hey, shh.” He kissed my forehead and draped his arm across my shoulders, rubbing my bicep. “It’s okay, baby girl. You’re going to be okay. We’re going to take you to the hospital, and everything is going to be taken care of. I got you. I won’t leave your side—”

“Milo—”

“No!” he snapped, stabbing his finger on the button for the elevator. “Now, I stayed away when you were sick right before your birthday, but not this time. You are my wife now, and my responsibility. I am going to take care of my baby girl.”

The doors swished open, and we stepped inside. Laying my cheek on his shoulder, I heaved a sigh, wishing Milo wasn’t such a wonderful man. Why couldn’t he be monogamous from the very beginning? Had he, I never would have allowed myself to start anything with Wyatt. He and I would still hate one another, and me and my husband would be looking at a forever future together.

The elevator reopened on the main floor and there was my Daddy, standing in the hallway, his blue pools wild and frantic.

Only holding my stare for a split second, he focused on Milo and said, “Uh, Frank’s got the car ready. You need me to help you get her to the car?”

“No, no. Stay away from her in case she’s got that virus. Don’t want you getting Rick sick.”

“Right. Anything I can do from here?”

“Call Wanderlust,” I whined, batting my lashes. “Let them know I won’t be in, and Tameika is in charge.”

“Sure thing, ma’am.”

Milo ushered me out the house, down the walkway, to the drive where Frank had the backdoor opened and waiting. I slid onto the bench and sighed, my hand pressing to my cramping stomach. Laying the back of my head to the seat, I closed my eyes and finally allowed myself to relax a bit.

That was too close. Wyatt and I needed to be more careful. It wasn’t just about us, anymore. We had Richard to think about now. We had to be more careful.
