The man just threatened to kill someone and not one person in the room so much as batted a lash, myself included. In fact, I shook my head, pissed that someone had the nerve to try and back out of a deal. If anything happened to whomever was on the other end of that conversation, they had no one to blame but themselves.

My fork stopped just before my opened mouth, my heart pausing for a couple seconds. Huh. Apparently, I was perfect to be his wife. Who knew I had this cold-hearted streak?

Finishing the bite, I caught Wyatt peering at me. In about ten minutes, the guys would be leaving for the city, and I would have no more reasons to avoid his confrontation. I could excuse myself from the kitchen to get ready for Wanderlust Masseuse, but that drive to the spa would be impossible to escape.

“That’s what I thought. I will see you Friday.”

He hung up and pocketed his phone. Pressing his palms on the surface, he closed his eyes and took a few calming breaths before lifting his lids to gaze at me. Pouting, he slid off the stool and rounded the bar to cup my cheek.

“I’m sorry, baby girl. Are you okay? I didn’t mean to be an ass to you.”

I found it odd that something as simple as snatching a plate from my grip out of frustration was noticed as being rude and hurtful, but sleeping with other women was not. Had he just kept his promise to me and given up the lovers when I asked, I never would have given in to Wyatt, I never would have fallen in love with him, and I wouldn’t be standing here, feeling wounded because both sides of my heart were breaking due to infidelity.

“It’s okay.”

He kissed me, keeping our stare locked. “Breakfast tastes amazing,” he muttered, stepping me to the corner of the counter and pinning me.

My pulse quickened, the world falling away and leaving the two of us alone. Holding his sides, my nails dragged up his back, a smile spreading my lips. “Yeah?”

“Not as good as you did last night,” he whispered, shoving his tongue in my mouth before kissing me.

My lids rounded and I giggled.

A screech pierced the air, the feet of a stool scraping the floor. Wyatt stomped past us, knocking into Milo to toss his plate into the sink, throwing his fork on top. The whole scene caused a loud ruckus that had Milo suspicious.

His hands still on my cheeks, he twisted his waist, his focus darting from the sink to him striding for the swinging door.

“Hey, what’s up with you?”

“Nothing, boss. Running late’s, all. Traffic is gonna be hell.”

He slammed his fist into the door and disappeared.

Milo brought his attention back to me, his lids low. “Something wrong?”

I arched a brow, toying with the knot in his tie. “I think he and his girlfriend are fighting.”

Doing a doubletake, he stepped away, shrugging his hands out. “Girl…Wyatt has a girlfriend?” Again twisting his waist, but to the other side, he looked at Frank who seemed just as confused.

“News to me, boss.”

“When did he get a girlfriend?” he asked me, returning to his plate to finish his meal.

I rolled a shoulder and turned on the water to rinse the dishes so I could load them in the washer. “No idea, I just heard them on the phone last night bickering. She was with him when he disappeared after his brother’s funeral.”

“I’ll be damned.”

“Well,” Frank mumbled around the food in his mouth. Standing, he brought me his empty plate and patted the top of my head with a wink of appreciation. “With the wedding coming up, he knows he’s gotta get on that baby making train. I’m not too surprised.”

My movements stilled, my heart sinking. Was that who she was? The woman he was going to have a baby with? I had forgotten about that.

The pain only intensified, burning my eyes with the threat of tears.

For the millionth time since meeting Milo, I asked myself what the hell had I gotten myself into and how the hell did I get out?

Using his middle finger, he traced my hairline, tucking the waves behind an ear. His focus concentrating on my features down the length of his nose, he smiled, that finger moving along my jawline to my chin. “You know how much I love you?”

Jarred by the question, I blinked and stiffened, my heart skipping. “What?”
