My lips pursed and I shrugged while gazing at him apologetically. “I do. I love Milo, I always will.”
“But.”
“But,” I sighed, dragging the word out. “If this was a normal lifestyle, we were normal people, and he wouldn’t have us both slaughtered, I would leave him to be with you.”
His Adam’s apple lurched, his complexion paling. “Chazzy, I—”
An odd ringtone echoed from his cellphone and alarm bells rang in my ears at his expression. Why did he appear as if he’d just seen a ghost?
“Uh…I…g-gotta get that,” he stammered, brusquely pushing me off.
Startled, my shoulders drew to my ears, my hands fanning out. What the hell? Did he seriously just dismiss me? For whom? That wasn’t Milo’s ringtone.
He snatched it up and answered, “Yeah?” while scratching his temple, trying to buffer his words.
My brows arched, an ickiness sinking into my gut. What the hell was this?
“I can’t talk right now. No, I can’t,” he wheezed, turning his back to me. “Because I can’t. It’s under the bed. Because that’s where I put it this morning. Look, I will see you in a few days. Listen to me, I cannot come to you tonight.”
My heart sank, horror washing over me. He was speaking to another woman. Did he have a girlfriend? Since when?
This morning? He was with her this morning? Was he with her the whole time he’d been gone? Maybe that’s why he didn’t come home after his brother’s funeral. Had there been another woman consoling him during his time of grief?
Devastated, I spun around on my toes and rushed out of the room as quietly as possible. I know it made me a hypocrite to be jealous, but I was. First, I had to share Milo, now I was sharing Wyatt. Apparently, I wasn’t good enough to satisfy any man on my own. They would always want someone else, as well.
Sneaking out of his apartment, I bounded down the stairs, my sight blurred from my tears. What the hell had I done to my life? I was now involved with two men, both of whom I loved, both who loved me…both who would kill me if I tried to end things.
And neither of them would be faithful.
I may as well just give in and take on as many lovers as possible myself. If they could do it, why couldn’t I?
Slamming my bedroom door behind me and locking it, I ran for the bathroom, stripped out of my dress, and hopped in the shower, wanting to wash Wyatt away. I wanted to wash this last year away and start over.
Chapter 26
Chastity Monroe
I could feel Wyatt’s stare all throughout breakfast. By the time I had cried my sorrow in the shower the night before, Milo was home, so it had been easy to avoid him. Setting the bowl of scrambled eggs on the island, I dared a glimpse and saw rage in his dark blue eyes, concentrated right on me.
My heart pattering on my ribs, I cleared my throat and turned around, buttering the slices of toast and cutting them in half. He could be mad at me all he wanted that I left without permission. Who the hell was he talking to on the phone? It was bad enough I knew Milo was still screwing around, to have to deal with it with Wyatt, too? It was too much. I couldn’t handle two wandering men. I had no choice but to accept Milo, but I didn’t have to put up with him.
The swinging door pushed open so Milo could stroll into the kitchen with a scowl already on his face. “I don’t really give a shit. I asked for two point five for that deal, don’t you dare come at me with a different price. I don’t care if it’s two million, four hundred and ninety-nine, that is not what I asked for. Don’t fuck with me, you son of a bitch!” he roared, slamming his fist on the counter.
Jumping, I cast him a glance, then Frank and Wyatt. They were sipping their orange juice, not fazed by the outburst. I had heard him angry before, shouting on the phone, but never this early. This was a sign of a bad day ahead.
He snatched the plate I offered so hastily, I swallowed a yelp and pulled my hand to my chest, my jaw falling.
“You want to play hardball, asshole? You think that’s wise?”
Plopping on the stool beside Frank, a sinister chuckle rang through the air, making my hairs stand on end. I handed Frank his plate and then worked on fixing Wyatt’s.
“Listen to me,” he hissed, switching to Italian. “This deal is going through one way or another. I have too much riding on this, too much invested. We can do this the easy way, or the hard way, capisce? Either way is fine with me, I still get what I want.”
And Milo Pampinella always got what he wanted, a voice in my head finished.
I set the plate in front of Wyatt, purposely not looking at him. My back to the guys, I prepared my own breakfast, tuning in to the argument.
“You got until Friday to get me my money, pompinara. Don’t disappoint me. Ti ammazzo.”
