My heart hurt, twisting in a million different directions. Pulling a ragged breath, I watched the sky turning more purple and bluer.
“How are you going to do it? Are you going to sleep with her, or…”
“I have never lived the life of a saint. I’ve had more lovers than I can count. Hell, most of them, I can’t even remember their faces, much less their names. Everyone knows I’m promiscuous. If I suddenly not want to fuck a woman and choose to do artificial insemination, don’t you think that will raise red flags? Especially with Milo?”
My skin was crawling, my stomach cramping. He was right. Milo had already made a few comments about how weird it was he hadn’t seen Wyatt with a woman in a while.
“I don’t feel good.”
Spreading his legs so he was straddling the chaise, he sat up, his elbows on his knees. “My kid will protect your kid, kitten. I’ll make sure he knows how important they are. I won’t let anything happen to your baby. I swear it.”
“And…” I licked my lips, suppressing the building sob. “If you have a girl? Do you just keep going until you have a boy?”
He dropped his head, holding his temples. “So far, my family line hasn’t had that problem. There hasn’t been a girl born to the Shaw’s in about a hundred years.”
This didn’t make me feel better. “Sounds like your genealogy line is about due, huh?”
He clapped his hands together and rolled a shoulder, staring at me. “What do you want me to do? Huh? Break generations of tradition?” Pointing to the dark green cushion, he hissed, “I have to do this. This is what I’m supposed to do. I was born to protect Milo, and my duty is to produce another son that will protect his kid. Every kid you have with him, I have to have a son, as well.”
“I don’t want to do this!”
“You aren’t doing anything. This is my responsibility.”
My thumb hooked under my chin, my fingers wrapped around my mouth, tears building. “Sometimes I wish I’d never met Milo,” I heard my voice say before the thought ever crossed my mind.
“I don’t understand. Why are you so upset over this? It makes no sense.”
Arching my brows, I gave a tormented gaze. “Because it does.”
“Why? You’re with Milo. You love him. What the hell does it matter what I do?”
“I…I-I…” Another sob stewing to the surface, I jumped to my feet and ran into his apartment.
“Chazzy!”
His heavy footsteps were chasing, the door banging open before I could slam it. Yelping, I sped up, stumbling through the door to the hallway. I stabbed the elevator button over and over, sniveling.
“Chazzy—”
He touched my shoulder, and I spun around, throwing my arms behind his neck, crushing our lips together. Grunting, his fingers buried in my hair as he walked me to the wall, pinning me. The kiss heated and passionate, our tongues frantically swirling together, my soul rejoiced when he groaned, his cock hardening against my stomach.
Wyatt reigned in the desperation, slowing the kiss from fervent to tender. His elbows pressed to his chest, he towered over me, our heads leisurely swaying as our lips and tongues savored one another.
My hands slid down his sides to his back, just above his waist, my fingers in the dip of his spine. Moaning, I grew heady, melting into him.
The elevator door swished and broke the spell. Gazing at him, yearning for more than a kiss, I covered my mouth and whimpered, a tear rolling down my cheek.
“Chazzy,” he panted, searching my face.
“I’m sorry,” I breathed, stepping into the elevator.
He gulped, one hand still on my jaw. I pressed the button for the main floor, too afraid to blink, knowing it would steal that fraction of a second I could be looking at him.
The door started to close so he withdrew his arm, his jaw twitching.
Hugging my stomach, I bent forward and wailed, the tears dripping to the floor. This was getting too hard. This wasn’t fun anymore. The cons were starting to outweigh the pros.
The elevator opening, I hurried out the house, down the drive, and across the street to the park.
