I mean, since being with Milo, she had definitely learned to be extravagant, but it hadn’t really changed her all that much. At first, she had been very uncomfortable with the extravagant gifts, constant vacations, the penthouse, clothes, jewels, everything. My original thought of her being a gold digger had been very short lived, for the woman had literally squirmed whenever she was showered with luxurious presents.
I took another drag, holding the nicotine in my lungs. It hadn’t been until she moved into the penthouse, she started relaxing and accepting the gifts more graciously. Chauffeuring her all over town to buy things to decorate it, she had begun to shed the resistance, and gave in to the wealth that had been bestowed upon her. Even then, she hadn’t just gone straight for the most expensive items. Instead, she’d looked for sales or haggled prices, wanting to save as much of her allowance as possible.
Why are you bothering? You’ve got plenty of money. Just pay the goddamn price, princess, and let’s get out of here.
I’m not going to squander money just because I have it, Wyatt. I’ve been poor before, and I won’t let it happen again, so if I can save a few hundred dollars here and there, I will.
It’s embarrassing, though, I had grumbled, looking over both shoulders to check our surroundings.
You are so snobby. Just go sit in the truck, I can handle this without you.
A small chuckle hitched the back of my nose, my sight blurring out the bustling street to focus on that memory. I had left her but did not go to the truck. Hiding on the far side of the furniture store, I had watched her talk the salesman down nearly four hundred dollars before agreeing to purchase her bedroom set. Even had the man giving free delivery if she waited an extra three days.
The smile falling, I took another drag, squinting against the smoke. And now she’d used that negotiation skill to buy her and Milo a home. A permanent home. Forever. She was engaged to become Mrs. Pampinella in just a few, short months.
Heaviness pushed on my chest, recalling how sweet her kisses were. Remembering the way she gazed into my eyes while crying out my name in the throes of passion had my blood racing. I missed my kitten.
The exit of the salon opened, and Jennifer strolled out. Her hair in a ponytail, wearing a thick, burgundy, wool dress, she was readjusting the strap of her bag over her jacket when she looked my way and spotted the truck. Her complexion blanched, her eyes bulging.
My teeth ground together, hatred bubbling to the surface. I had known about hers and Milo’s affair since the very first time they fucked. Keeping that secret all those months, watching the two girls interact, Jennifer behaving as if she weren’t stabbing her best friend in the back every single day had been hard. Listening to Chastity go on and on about how wonderful her sweet little friend was had been nauseating.
It wasn’t my job to tell her, however. My job was to protect her while trying to seduce her, testing her loyalty to the boss.
Now I was in love with her. Everything was a big mess. I was madly in love with the one person I hated from the moment I laid eyes on and could do nothing about it.
Jennifer looked up and down the street, waiting for the traffic before darting forward.
My resentment deepened. I was in love with Chasity and this fucking cunt was threatening to hurt her in ways she could never recover. How could she stand to look at herself in the mirror every morning? Chastity had been a good friend, amazing, and she had willingly started an affair with the man she loved, deceived her every waking minute of the days, and was now threatening to destroy the one and only relationship she’d ever had. Who did that? What kind of lowlife scum had so little conscious, as to betray their so-called friend on so many levels?
As she approached the driver’s side, I rolled my window down but didn’t bother to look at her. Flicking my cigarette to the ground, she hopped to the side to avoid being hit.
“Get in.”
“Why?”
“Boss wants to see you.”
Her eyelids rounded, a wide smile spreading across her mouth. “Oh, does he, huh?”
“Yup.”
More arrogant than she had the right to be, she pranced around the front of the truck and hopped into the passenger seat. Tossing her purse to the floor, she hooked her belt, crossed her arms, and bobbed her head while smirking.
Disgusted, I rolled up the window, shifted to drive, and pulled away from the curb. This would not be about protecting Milo’s relationship, this was for my kitten. I was going to take great pleasure ridding the world of someone as slimy as this stupid whore.
Wyatt Shaw
“Where are we going?”
“Just shut up and follow me.”
Trekking through the woods I was all too familiar with, I cast a glimpse over my shoulder at her apprehensive expression. Afraid she was about to bolt, I slowed my steps to get a cigarette so she would get ahead.
“I don’t like this—”
“Would you shut up? He has a cabin out here, it’s his private place. Chazzy doesn’t even know about it.”
Her brows lifting, she twisted her waist, still walking. “Really? Just how much money he got?”
