Me and Wyatt strained our necks to peer inside past the old woman.

“No, fucking way,” he wheezed, bounding to his feet.

Rage gripped my muscles, breaking me out in a light sweat. “All right. Are we done here?”

“Yes, sir. I’ll go back to the office, write all this up, and list it. Should be on the market by the end of the week.”

“Uh huh. Thanks.”

Holding Jennifer’s worried stare, I strutted into the apartment with my arms folded over my chest, my teeth grinding. Wyatt right behind, he closed the balcony door and lit a cigarette. The realtor gathered her belongings, stuffed them in a thin, leather briefcase, and flashed a smile while strolling down the hallway. When the heavy, metal door closed behind her, my rage shifted to a dangerous level.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

She was trembling, wringing her gloved hands together. Bouncing from one foot to the other, she cleared her throat several times, her sight darting around the room.

“H-How’s…Chazz? She doin’ okay?”

Lifting my brows, I flashed an arrogant stare and nodded. “She’s doing wonderful. Been on cloud nine since I put a ring on her finger.”

Her lids rounded, her jaw falling. “Y-You’re…e-en-engaged?”

“Yup, so if you’re here trying to rekindle something, you can forget it.”

“No, that’s…” She whimpered, stamping her foot. Chewing the inside of her cheek, she squeaked, “We…we need to talk.”

“No, we don’t. Get out.”

“But, I need to talk to you.”

“Wyatt,” I barked, snapping my fingers.

He tucked the cigarette between his lips, grabbed her elbow, and started dragging her to the hallway.

“I’m pregnant!” she shouted, slapping at him to break free.

“Oh fuck,” he croaked, releasing her immediately.

The explosion inside was painful, knocking the air from my lungs, stabbing my heart, and tearing my gut into pieces all at the same time. “What?”

She straightened her jacket and tossed her hair off her face, trying to look braver than I knew she was. “I’m pregnant.”

“Well, it isn’t mine.”

“It is, too!” she screeched.

“The fuck it is!” I roared, swiping my hands through the air.

“I wasn’t with no one else at that time.”

“Bullshit! Bullshit, Jennifer. I know you were fucking that married man, too.”

“Nuh uh!” she cried in her country drawl, staggering toward me with tears on her cheeks. “I cut him off cuz I thought we was—”

“What the fuck did you think you and me were? Huh?” I pointed in her face, seething with rage. “I never promised you shit. I never hinted at you being anything other than one of my many whores.”

She slapped me across the cheek, so I slammed my palms to her shoulders, knocking her away. She shrieked, stumbling to keep her balance.

“I loved you.”
