Yvette laughed softly. “My husband has an eye for that kind of thing.”

Wes leaned in and gave Yvette a kiss on the cheek. “You’re the best sister-in-law.”

“I’m your only sister-in-law.” Then she turned to her children. “Let’s go home.”

“But I want to hear about the demons!” Cooper protested.

“Another day,” Yvette said.

“Why don’t you come by tomorrow afternoon and I’ll tell you all about it?” Wes asked.

“During daylight?” Virginia asked and stared at him.

“I’m a hybrid,” Cooper said proudly. “Half vampire, half human. I don’t burn in the sun like a pureblood vampire.”

“Oh, that’s what it is.” She shook her head. “I was wondering why your aura and your sister’s were a little off from a vampire’s.”

Cooper looked at her with pride in his eyes. “Yeah, we’re pretty cool, aren’t we?” Then he nodded at her. “But you’re cool, too. Dad said he saw you make yourself invisible and walk through a wall. I’d like to learn that.”

Virginia laughed. “I’m afraid that’s not something anybody can teach you. It’s genetic.”

“Bummer!”

“Well, maybe,” Wesley hedged with a sideways glance at Virginia, “Virginia will give you a demonstration tomorrow if you’re coming to visit.”

Cooper’s eyes lit up. “Yeah!”

Yvette smiled at him. “Thanks, Wes. Good night, Virginia. I’m sure we’ll see you soon.”

Then she ushered her children outside, and silence fell over the house again.

Wesley turned slowly, facing Virginia. “I believe we were interrupted just as you were about to tell me more about that golden shimmer.”

Virginia felt her heart pound into her throat. Wesley deserved an answer. After all, he’d been open with her, confessed that he’d experienced a vampire’s bite as part of a sexual encounter. So why was she still hesitating? Was it because once she told him what it would do to him, Wes would ask her to make love to him that way? And what then? Was she prepared for it? Was she prepared to give so much of herself to him?

“It’s the virta, our life force, that makes you shimmer golden. It’s a connection that we only seek with those we love. Nobody would perform that ritual with a casual acquaintance, or a one-night stand.”

She noticed Wesley’s expression suddenly turn serious. “I understand. It’s okay.”

He dropped his arms, preparing to step away, but she gripped his biceps.

“It’s very intimate. It’s like sharing your soul with another being. And it heightens the sexual experience. Logan probably told you that when Leila shimmers golden, all Aiden has to do is touch her and she’ll climax again.”

Wes nodded in silence.

“It’s different for men. If a female guardian pours her virta into a man, any man, no matter the species, he’ll start to shimmer golden just like Leila did. And when that same female touches him again while his skin glows,”—she blushed a little—“he’ll get an instant erection.”

Wesley’s chin dropped and his eyes widened. “You’re kidding me.”

“No.”

“How long does the shimmer last?”

“Hours, depending on the amount of virta. Six, eight, even ten hours isn’t uncommon.”

“Fuck me!” he murmured and stared at her, his eyes now full of interest, full of eager anticipation. “You mean if you, just hypothetically, were to pour your virta into me, I’d have a hard-on for ten hours?”
