The implications hit me. “All of them?”
“Yes, and they all quit being nuns. You’re next on the list. He’s taunting you right now.”
“Fuck! Just my damn luck. Did my parents hire him?” I asked.
Wylde looked surprised at the question and shook his head. “We didn’t consider that he’s a hired killer. It’s possible, but my gut tells me no.”
“Those images, they’re real?”
“As far as we can tell, Nun,” Cassidy replied.
“Is my family at risk? Because if they are…” I meant my sisters, Blue, Priest, and the rest. Sapphire immediately understood my meaning.
“We stand and fight together, Nun. No running away to be a martyr. If you even try, I’ll have you locked up until this ends, hear me?” Sapphire snapped.
“Heard, Prez.”
“We don’t know if he’ll go after Blue and the others, so we’re bringing you all in. Better to be over-vigilant than risk someone’s safety,” Sapphire declared.
“I’ll start packing,” I murmured and spun around.
Cassidy took my back.
Sapphire
“She’ll behave for now, but I can’t guarantee how long,” I commented to Wylde.
“The problem is, the Feds will march in, throw their weight around, and cut us out. They’ll try to lock her down or use her as bait. As far as they’re concerned, Nun’s isn’t a high-value victim.”
“Because she’s RHMC.”
“Yeah.”
Wylde held my eyes. “Sapphire, you need to know. I’m working on several cases that have tenuous links to the Harlots. There’s Kiki’s kidnapping, sure. Earl Gerrit marched Loretta in, and she confessed, but that man hates the club. Earl didn’t want to bring her in, and he dropped that there has been a sudden death,” Wylde said.
“Yeah, one of theirs died suddenly,” I replied. I held his eyes and managed not to squirm.
“Yeah, conveniently after you rode to rescue Kiki.”
“She had a heart attack. Nobody can blame us for that. We never spilt blood, started trouble, or did anything. The bitch died from a poor life. We got Kiki back, and you got a closed case,” I responded.
Wylde didn’t argue; I knew he wouldn’t, but I saw the knowledge in his eyes. He was aware a sister had killed old Lady Gerrit.
“We’ve apprehended a drug dealer; he was selling contaminated baggies. He can’t remember who beat the shit out of him, but he’s fuckin’ terrified. Sapphire, he wakes up screaming from nightmares but won’t talk about them. We’ve got over a dozen victims like him, including Jed Gerrit. Do I need to quit my job?”
I gaped at Wylde. I’d not seen that coming. “No. You’re fine. There are no solid links between my club and them.”
“Babe, there are connections, just no evidence.”
“Wylde, I’d never endanger you,” I promised.
“And I’d certainly not pick the job over you. Remember that.”
I smiled and rose to kiss him. “Let’s go get Nun before she takes matters into her own hands.”
“She can be an errant child at times,” Wylde agreed.
“They all are!” I exclaimed, referring to my sisters. Each of them had their moments. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
