By the time this was over, both of them would be out of my life.
“Wait a second. You got a liquor stash under your desk?”
I laughed as I bent down and pulled out my personal bottle of tequila. It wasn’t even that big, so PB was really doing too much.
I playfully rolled my eyes at him. “First of all, I be getting stressed when I’m in here sketching and trying to come up with new ideas. Sometimes I need a little sip to get my creative juices flowing. Mind your business.”
“Creative juices?” He chuckled. “That’s what you calling it?”
“That’s exactly what I’m calling it.”
I pulled two cups from the cabinet before walking over to my little countertop ice maker. After scooping ice into both cups, I returned the scooper, carried them back to my desk, and popped open the bottle.
“Damn,” he complained as I poured tequila into both cups. “You got me drinking white again.”
“Sorry, bookie.”
I held my cup out toward him. “Let’s make a toast.”
PB picked his up. “Okay. What we toasting to?”
“Just us being us.”
He laughed. “I ain’t never heard that toast before, but fuck it. I’ll drink to it.”
We tapped our cups together before taking the shots.
The tequila burned its way down my throat, making my entire face twist. I grabbed my chest with one hand as I lowered my cup with the other.
“Whew!”
His face wasn’t much better.
“See?” I laughed. “You can’t even handle it.”
“Man, please. I handled that shit better than you.”
“Mmm-hmm.”
I set my cup down, took his from him, and placed it beside mine.
“Okay, come on. Let me give you a tour. It’s not too big in here, but use your imagination.”
He slowly glanced around the office. “This about the same size as your apartment.”
I cut my eyes at him. “Don’t forget, I will cut you.”
“You always threatening somebody.”
“And you keep coming around, so clearly you like it.”
I grabbed his hand and pulled him away from the desk.
My office wasn’t huge, but it was mine. Every inch of it represented something I had worked for. I showed him my sewing machine, the different needles and threads I used, and the shelves where I kept my fabric.
“This is a four-way stretch. That means it stretches in every direction instead of only from side to side.”
PB picked up a piece of fabric and examined it like he knew what he was looking at.
