“Agreed.”
“I want Fortis. We can get onto the island by ferry, but a bunch of men is going to be a major red flag and we have no clue about the fucking locals. If we can get Lucy and Roz and maybe a few of the guys, then we can go in with a few couples and it will look less conspicuous.”
“Let me talk to Zack. His kid is due any day now but if he can spare them, I know he’ll help.”
“Fine. Call me back as soon as.” Alex went to disconnect.
“Alex?”
“Yes?”
“What are we doing about Simon Booth?”
“He’s been dealt with.”
“Dead?” Jack asked but he already knew.
“Yep. Couldn’t take the risk he would come for Evelyn again.”
“Good. I’ll get a clean-up crew to the house just as soon as I call Zack. Then I’ll see if he can send Daniel. You might need a medic as Wagg’s can’t go.”
The thought was like a giant pit opening in his gut. The idea of Evelyn hurt in any way was like a physical pain in his body. “Thanks, Jack.”
Disconnecting he turned to find Gunner standing behind him. The look on his face was unreadable. “We have a traitor?” he asked with what looked like barely controlled anger.
Alex looked around to see if anyone was close before he answered. “Yes, it looks that way.”
“Do we know who it is?”
Alex shook his head in frustration. “No, and this stays strictly between us. I can’t have all the men looking over their shoulders. It’s bad enough I am.”
“Fuck.” And there was that word again.
“Yeah, fuck,” he said tiredly.
“Let me know what I can do to help. This shit doesn’t fly.” Gunner didn’t look happy as he adjusted his sling.
“Yeah, will do. For now, I just want Evelyn back.”
“Yeah, I get that. I like her, she’s good for you. You’re a lucky man,” Gunner said with a chuckle.
“Yeah, I am.” But he didn’t fucking deserve her. He should have kept her safe and he hadn’t. The phone rang in his hand and he lifted it. “I need to take this,” he stated making it clear he wanted privacy and Gunner nodded before moving back inside while Alex watched. “Alex.”
“You have Lucy, Jace, Roz, K, and Daniel on their way. They should be there by lunchtime.”
Relief washed through Alex at the first good sign he’d had since he let Evelyn leave his side. “Thank you, Jack.” After a short conversation confirming the details, he ended the call. When he got Evelyn back, he was tying her to the bed and leaving her there where she would be safe.
