What the fuck was she so scared of?
Dropping the bag to the ground with a thump, she crossed her arms.
“What the fuck is going on?” she demanded.
Galen
His heart, ancient as it was, still ran just fine, Galen would like to report. It hadn’t stopped racing since he’d walked in the door, found Maeve with a bag packed big enough to… to leave. Because she knew. She’d found out. And she didn’t want anything to do with him.
But she didn’t know the whole story. She didn’t know the truth, she only had her own misconceptions to go off of.
Galen wasn’t going to let her leave without learning everything. Not now. Not when finally—
Of course, once she had every fact, if she still…
If she still wanted to leave after she had all the facts…
That was Maeve’s decision.
The Maeve in front of him, the one demanding to know what the fuck was going on. That was his Maeve. That familiar spark in her eyes, ready to flay him alive if he didn’t listen.
He felt his lips twitch, affection swelling in his chest as he stared at her, arms crossed and expression broadcasting much the same.
And suddenly, he didn’t know what to say.
“Uh…” His brain sputtered like an old car, but nothing came out.
“Unbelievable,” she spat through gritted teeth. “You don’t even have anything to say?”
He leapt into action as Maeve leaned down to grab her bag.
“Okay, okay!” he urged, holding out a hand. “I just need a second to… collect my thoughts.”
“You do?” she shrieked, snapping back up with a finger pointed in his direction. He winced. “My boyfriend just sprouted horns and wings and you’re the one who needs a minute? Ugh!”
Well, when she put it like that…
Any second now, steam was going to trickle from her ears. He just knew it.
“Fine! I’m a demon!” he shouted, aiming to get the words in before her fucking temper exploded and she ate his soul.
And that was coming from someone who knew someone who actually did eat souls.
“Yes, I gathered that much, thank you. And?” She rolled her hand, motioning for him to get on with it.
“I mean… that’s it? What do you want? I don’t know where to start.”
“The beginning works,” she suggested dryly.
Okay, so all he had to do was tell her everything she thought about the afterlife was wrong. Great. “Of my life? Uh… are you in the mindset to have all your beliefs challenged and possibly proven wrong?”
Humans loved their beliefs, and more power to them, but Galen wasn’t actively trying to stress Maeve out. Telling her Heaven and Hell actually existed might be a lot.
“Galen, I’m atheist!” she argued. “You know this! I don’t have any beliefs.”
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Galen took a deep breath. “That’s my point. I think we should sit down,” he suggested.
“That is literally the last thing I need to do right now,” she retorted. “I don’t want to be still. You sit down.”
