Found…
Maeve cocked her head to the side, choosing to play dumb. “What do you mean?”
Galen lowered his head, one brow arched high. “Come on, I’m not stupid. What gave it away? Was it the shirts? I just kept forgetting to take them off before I… Maybe I am stupid.” He groaned aloud to himself, and Maeve kept quiet.
She didn’t know what to do. She didn’t want to admit it. Was it bad for her to know? What if that was a death sentence?
Was she going to die?
No. Galen wouldn’t let anything happen to her.
Right?
Unbidden, her throat grew tight with emotion, and she turned her head to the side. She squeezed her fingers around the bag and cursed her luck.
If she’d just packed a little bit faster.
If she’d not followed him in the first place, if she’d been content with her ignorance.
If only she… hadn’t swiped right.
“Just… let me go stay with Amanda,” she choked out, gaze heavy on the curtains to her right. She couldn’t look at him.
But they both knew what she was asking. He could read between the lines.
“I can’t do that,” he said, voice hard. “I can’t.”
The finality in his tone made her heart sink, and she swallowed, closed her eyes, refused to face him. It pushed a tear down her cheek, and she angrily brushed the offensive wetness away.
Maeve was not going to cry.
If she was going to die because she had shitty taste in men, the last thing she wanted to do was give him the satisfaction of her tears.
“Maeve… you’re mine,” he said softly, “and I won’t let you go, not without letting me explain.”
Her gaze snapped open. “Explain what?” she asked, finally facing him.
His expression was stricken. “Explain what’s going on. I’m sure you have a lot of questions,” he said reasonably.
Reasonably. As if the devil wasn’t standing in her living room. As if she hadn’t been dating him for the past year.
As if he didn’t go into dark alleys and grow a pair of horns and veiny wings and disappear into a cloud of smoke like something out of a horror movie.
Maeve finally lifted her gaze to him, studying his expression. Unbidden, her gaze drew upward, searching his dark waves for any hint of horn. She’d never felt anything while she’d run her fingers through his hair.
But… She blinked away the image that burned itself into her mind. Where were they?
“I can hide them,” Galen whispered, and she dropped her gaze back to his.
He ran a hand through his waves. “Can’t very well blend in with them out, can I?” he asked with a wry smile.
Maeve huffed out a breath, still at a loss for words. She didn’t know what to say, how to act.
She narrowed her gaze on Galen. The man she’d dated for the last year. They had inside jokes. They did couple things that no one else did. She cooked his favorite meal, and he baked her favorite brownies. They got drunk, and they’d embarrassed each other, and she’d yelled at him and he’d growled at her and—
If she could do all that then why was it so different now? He’d been a demon this whole fucking time?
He could have killed her already!
