“I can have it couriered.”

“No.”

Another pause.

“No?” Tamara repeats.

Her tone becomes flatter.

“To Los Angeles?”

“Yes.”

“You’re in Northern California.”

“I’m aware.”

Tamara says nothing for a moment, which is usually how she communicates judgment without wasting words on it. I walk toward the windows. The storm has passed, leaving the hills washed clean beneath a pale morning sky.

“I’m still here through tomorrow, correct?” I ask.

“Yes. You have the systems review this afternoon and the expansion meetings tomorrow morning. Adrian is covering New York.”

“Good.”

“So this isn’t about changing your schedule?”

“No.”

Tamara makes a quiet sound that tells me she does not believe that is the entire answer.

I ignore it.

“The address should already be somewhere in the travel records,” I tell her.

“Vanguard provided contact information for the California leg.”

“I can check with travel.”

“Do that.”
