“Can’t or won’t?”
“Julian.”
I hear the warning in my name.
She steps around me.
I let her.
At the door, she pauses.
“We’ll finish this later,” Sophie says.
I do not answer immediately.
She looks back at me.
“I mean it.”
Then she opens the door and leaves. The sudden quiet is tangible.
I stand there for several seconds, before turning back toward the mess we left behind.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Julian
The room feels different after Sophie leaves. Her perfume still lingers faintly in the air, the sheets are twisted from the night before, and one of her earrings is sitting near the edge of the nightstand where she must have set it down and forgotten it.
I shower, dress, and force myself through coffee before I notice the leather bag beside the chair.
Her work bag.
I stare at it for a second, then cross the room and pick it up. The weight tells me her laptop is still inside.
“Jesus, Sophie.”
I reach for my phone.
The easiest solution is obvious. Have someone from site operations package it, send it overnight, and let Vanguard deal with the rest.
I open Tamara’s contact instead.
She answers on the third ring.
“You’re supposed to be taking it easy?”
“I was.”
“That sounded past tense.”
“It is.”
Tamara exhales. “What do you need?”
“I need Sophie Callahan’s Los Angeles address.”
There is a pause.
