“Hi Halo. How are you today?” I walked around the counter to where Halo was.
He and his brothers loved edibles. Halo’s favorite was the gummy worms or cookies. He always wore a bandana with whatever outfit he had on.
It would be tied around his head and his long braids hung down. This time he wore a pair of jeans with a tan and brown True Religion shirt. His bandana was tan. It matched his gold chain and diamond stud in his ear. He was ‘90s fine and I wanted to wrap my legs around him.
“Sup Dallas.”
“Nothing much. Got into it with my dad earlier but luckily work distracted me.” I brought my voice down some then tried to pretend like I was relieved at my own words.
“Damn that’s fucked up. Sorry about that. What’chal get into it about?”
This is why I liked Halo. It wasn’t in him to be dismissive like his brothers.
“My mom died and it left my dad to raise me. He isn’t them best at his emotions, I saw our made and nanny more than I saw him. He spoiled me in replacement of parenting. I guess he tries to make up for it by having these dinners on Thursdays. I skipped the last two and he got angry.”
“Seems like he’s trying to repent for his sins and you not giving him a chance. Try to chill, it’s one evening that won’t kill you. Just my opinion, I’d give anything to have at least one of my parents back. You got the opportunity, don’t waste it.”
I did not expect him to get that deep. I felt like a brat now and did not want him to see me that way. Everyone knew what happened to their parents and here I was complaining about mine.
“You’re right, I’ll try and give him a chance. Thank you, Halo.” I politely told him.
“No problem. And sorry about your mama, I didn’t know she died.”
“Thanks again and yup, she died when I was eight.” I could feel the connection we just created.
Normally I had small talk with him, and it was enough but not this time. “Halo, can I ask you something?”
“Fa’sho, what’s up?”
I became jittery but I calmed myself down so I could talk. “I was wondering if we could hang out sometimes. Just me and you, go to get something to eat.”
“Dallas, that sounds cool and all but I gotta swerve that to the left. I got a girl now.”
I heard him but I just couldn’t believe what he said.
“A girl. Like a girl who is just your friend?”
Halo did a low laugh, “Naw, like a girl who is my girl, my woman, mine.”
“W-When did that happen?” I tried not to sound baffled or bothered but I could not hide it.
“It’s new but it’s official. Me and you can be cool but---
“Who is the girl?”
“Story!” Golden cam and put his arm around Halo’s neck. “My brother let her clamp his dick down!”
“Shut the hell up Golden. Damn!” Halo pushed his arm off him then he walked away to where Greek was.
“That boring hoe from Blake’s party? That’s why his girl is?”
Golden cracked up, “Yeah. Look, don’t tell my brother this but don’t let that shit stop you. It’s his first bitch and his head in the clouds. You and I both know that shit won’t last. Keep ya’ cool and I’ll tell you when to throw the pussy at him.”
I heard and agreed with him, but I was still envious. The brothers made a big purchase of edibles and as soon as they left, I hurried to catch Aspen up.
“Do not tell me you made fake pages so you could follow this girl” Aspen asked me when she came in the back room on break and saw me on my phone.
“I sure did and I do not care. I’m about to follow this hoe on IG and Tik Tok. She got my damn man with her weird ass! Who the hell has one dimple! An ugly weirdo that’s who! Ugh!” I was so mad I wanted to kill Story.
