Use memory.

Use isolation.

Turn love into a weapon.

Make the prisoner believe resistance only prolonged suffering for everyone else.

It had worked before.

It should have worked on Wade Parker.

It never did.

Wade faced Reeves again.

“Every day you told us we’d been forgotten.”

The colonel slowly lifted his head.

“And every day,” Wade continued, “you were wrong.”

Grant Barrett spoke from the rear of the helicopter.

“We remembered each other.”

Jackson sat beside him.

“That was enough.”

Madow studied the survivors.

Older.

Thinner.

Damaged.

But not broken.

That was the problem with men like them.

Pain could weaken the body.

It could scar the mind.

But sometimes it sharpened the thing inside a man that refused to kneel.

Sarah looked toward Madow.

“You kept them alive.”

He held her gaze.

“You reported them dead,” she continued. “You imprisoned them. Tortured them. Used them.”

Madow said nothing.
