Besides, they can have Rossi. For a man who swore up and down he’d never race for that team, it’s amazing what desperation will lead you to do.
I was the only one Apex offered a contract to. I didn’t know it at the time when I turned it down, though. The three-year deal they offered, along with the decision to switch engine manufacturers in the coming year, was a no-brainer. That I accepted.
Rossi can navigate the new waters. I’ll stick with the ones that valued me even when I thought they didn’t and proved it with the contract they offered in the end.
And as I watch her gaze out the window in wonder, I know it was all fucking worth it. Every agonizing minute of hiding. Every moment of feeling like an arsehole for not speaking up for us sooner.
It all led to right now and fuck if I couldn’t be more right about anything in my life.
“Land. There’s land,” she shrieks as we begin to fly over some.
“Yes. There’s land.” I laugh and lean forward and press a kiss to her lips. “And pretty soon, you’ll have to put the blindfold on so you don’t ruin your surprise.”
“I don’t need a surprise, Lachlan Evans. I just need you.” Another lingering kiss. “And you were the best surprise of all.”
EPILOGUE TWO
Blair
It’s cold.
I’ll give him that. I don’t need to lift this blindfold to know that much.
It’s cold, despite the heavy jacket he put on me, and the terrain is uneven.
For the life of me I have absolutely no idea where we are.
But isn’t that how this whole adventure has been with him? A random moment in time led us to this, right here, right now. To the contentment I feel deep in my bones and a happiness that seems so damn endless.
“I appreciate the fact that you want to surprise me, Lach, but this is getting a little ridiculous.”
“Patience, Tink.”
“Ha. I think I’ve given you plenty of patience,” I tease, because I feel like I’ve been blindfolded forever.
I feel the warmth of Lachlan’s body behind me as he wraps his arms around me and presses a kiss to the crown of my head. “Just one more minute,” he says. “I want it to be perfect.”
“I don’t want perfect. I just want you.”
“You remember that first night? I told you about the hummingbird and you told me you wanted to fly?”
“Yes?” I say slowly, trying to figure out what I’m missing. What he’s doing.
“I can’t give you the ability to fly, but I can give you this.”
And with those words he lifts my blindfold off and I’m hit with the most incredible sight I’ve ever seen.
The sky around me, over me, before me, dances in green and blue and yellow lights. They are everywhere we look.
The northern lights.
I feel like I’m in a snow globe of never-ending amazement.
“Lachlan,” I say, offering him a glance but afraid to take my eyes off the wonder all around.
“I know,” he whispers. “It’s incredible. It’s better than I thought. It’s . . .”
“Everything,” I say. “You did this for me?”
