Chapter fifteen

Feeling Dani’s heartache first hand wasn’t something I wanted to experience often. It was as if my own heart was breaking at the thought of losing my mother, who was still alive and well. Never did I imagine all that would be involved in being bonded to an Omega. We’d gone from one extreme of overwhelming love and joy to not only hearing our girl sobbing in the other room but experiencing it with her. I rubbed a hand over my chest like that would relieve some of the pain, but it wasn’t mine to manage. Petru, unable to hold back any longer, headed for the living room.

“Hold on one sec, Savo,” Sorin said abruptly, cutting off what the other man was saying to whisper something to Petru as he passed by. With a nod and a reassuring squeeze on Sorin’s arm, Petru went to look after our Omega.

Sorin closed his eyes and softly cleared his throat, before resuming the call. It was the only sign he was aware of what Dani was dealing with right now. “The situation since we last spoke is a little different. Tori and Violet are both safe, awaiting whatever plan we have to get them out of Asturg. Danella, well…She’s now my pack’s bonded Omega.”

Silence fell on the other end of the line.

“There’s more,” Sorin added. “A rather unexpected occurrence that I think will literally change the world as we know it. I’m not talking out of my ass on this, either. Because of Dani, I’ve been placed in a situation where we might be able to end this war.”

“I believe you, man, hell I have firsthand experience with that. Our Omega, Cambrie, is the reason we took a stand and changed things here in Oscad. It’s fucking nuts the lengths you will go for someone you want to protect with every ounce of your body,” Savo said, his words full of emotions I could now understand.

It’s only been an hour since I bonded with Dani and Cris, but there is no doubt in my mind that I would destroy anyone or anything that dared to harm or take them from me. As an Alpha, I’ve always been more laid back, but I had a feeling that was about to change.

“Seeing as you’ve gone through this already, I feel more confident in sharing the rest of this with you. My team found Dani and her friends after we attacked an outpost on the border. The outpost your half-brother Lucian was commander of. In a series of events I’m not going to go into, Lucian is also bonded to Dani,” Sorin shared, letting that bomb drop and now awaiting to hear the reaction.

“Lu… Lucian? Is that who my father picked to take my place when I left?” Savo asked.

My brows shot up, utterly surprised he had no idea. Had the man not kept tabs on what was going on in Asturg? Could it be that he’d turned his back on everything so completely he didn’t want to know?

“You didn’t know?” Sorin asked skeptically. “How could you not know who was next in line when your packmate is the fucking Head Speaker?”

“Hey, I don’t do the politics side of things. My job is to protect our Omega and ensure she stays out of trouble as she tries to rescue the world. The second I crossed the border, Asturg was dead to me. I wanted nothing to do with it, ever. Then I had to go and pick myself a woman to love more than life itself, who got the bright idea to send black market smugglers in after the stolen Omegas. Now here I am, waist-deep, in the shit that’s my home country,” Savo growled. “So no, I didn’t have a fucking clue about Lucian. Father liked to keep his sons separated once they were old enough for him to train individually.”

Sorin grunted at this as if he was willing to accept that answer. “Regardless of your personal view of Asturg, Lucian and I are uniquely positioned to change things. We are formulating a plan to kill your father and his men and take over the country. Once we do that, we’ll approach my father about a peace treaty and end this godforsaken war once and for all.”

“Oh, is that all?” Savo drawled.

“No, we want to build an army of people who’ve hidden from the camps in the mountains and possibly ask Oscad for assistance as well,” Sorin continued. “As you said yourself, our Omega is from a prominent family. I’m the president’s heir to the South, as Lucian is to the North. Now tell me a better scenario for making real, lasting change happen in your home country?”

A heavy sigh could be heard through the phone. “Let me talk to a few people and see their reactions to this situation. I can’t promise anything, but I know for a fact that if Cambrie finds out about this, you’ll end up with more than you bargained for.”

“Sounds like our Omegas would get along well,” Sorin chuckled. “Dani is never one to underestimate.”

“Ha, well, I’m sure a disciplined man such as yourself has a handle on things,” Savo teased.

Sorin laughed softly. “Just as I’m sure you keep your pack in line, following all the rules I remember you loving to enforce.”

“Fuck, who are we kidding? That woman rules this home, as I’m sure yours will soon,” Savo groaned. “Although I think she’s going to have competition with Dalton now in the picture. That baby can make the burliest of men turn to putty with a single coo.”

“I’m truly happy for you and your pack, my friend. It sounds like leaving here was the right choice for you, and I’m glad you found peace and love after all you’ve endured,” Sorin said, his words ringing honest and true. “If I could ask one more small favor on behalf of Dani.”

With timing that couldn’t be more perfect, Petru walked back into the room and shook his head before telling Sorin something in a low voice. Our leader’s face fell into a scowl, not liking the answer he’d been giving.

“Tell me what it is, and I’ll see what I can do,” Savo answered. “I’m guessing it will be easier to accomplish than overthrowing the government and stopping a war that’s been going on for generations.”

“Dani heard you say her mother isn’t doing well. I tried to have one of the others convince her to go back with the other two so she can see her. Danella was living this whole time under the impression that her mother didn’t survive Dani being taken from their home. My request is for you to tell her mother that she is alive, safe, happy, and part of a pack that loves her. It’s my hope that knowing her daughter is alive and well will help her to hold on until we can get Dani back to see her,” Sorin explained.

“Consider it done. Cambrie will meet with her parents immediately to tell them that if I let her. Family is incredibly important to her, so it will be no trouble at all to make it happen,” Savo assured us. “Also, I’m sorry. If I’d known she was there and could hear me, I wouldn’t have put it so callously.”

“There was no way for you to know, and it’s been something that’s weighed heavily on her for an incredibly long time. Now she has answers, and the sooner we stabilize things here, the better,” Sorin reasoned.

“Do I have a day or two to gather the information and see how willing they’ll be to help?” Savo inquired.

Sorin scratched his chin, then nodded to himself. “Two is the most I can give you before we need to make a move. If the other two Omegas need to sit tight while we try to end this war, they are in the safest place we can provide them. Just so you have all the facts when you talk to your people.”

“Then I’m going to hang up and get to work. Stay safe, Sorin,” Savo said before hanging up.
