“Toma, tell me, my boy, did you find the bastards?” The suddenness and volume of the Commandant speaking had me jumping back from the computer.

Toma grimaced as he turned down the volume and answered. “Yes, sir, we were able to track down three northern soldiers. They gave us a good workout but aren’t used to maneuvering through the woods.”

“Good, good. Sorin, I’m assuming you’re here as well?”

“You’re correct, sir,” Sorin confirmed. “I’d like to request we be given a few days to make damn sure we didn’t miss any of them. The bastards made it too far past the border without anyone noticing, and I don’t like it. Something tells me there’s more to this than just fucking with the power plant and running away.”

I frowned at Sorin’s words, then realized they’d had to give a believable reason to come after me. They would have been expected to return to base after securing the power plant.

“Couldn’t agree with you more,” Commandant Stoll muttered. “I’ll give you a week, not that I think you’ll need it, but I don’t want anyone in parliament coming back at us saying we didn’t take this seriously. Your unit has the best trackers we’ve got, but if you need assistance, say the word and I’ll have units Bravo and Charlie sent your way.”

“We’ll move faster with it being just us, but I appreciate the offer. We’re making camp at location, charlie, alpha, bravo, india, november forty-two. It seems fully stocked for our needs but wanted command to know it will need to be serviced once we return,” Sorin shared.

“Will do. Yasen is making a note of it as we speak. How is that little Omega of yours holding up? I was impressed with the feedback I got from others who’d been observing her training. Just wanted to make sure she wouldn’t be a hindrance on this. Military life is vastly different from laying on your back all day,” the commandant rambled.

Anger flickered through me at his words, causing my hands to ball into fists. On my fucking back—how dare he presume to know what my life had been like. I’d love nothing more than to see him survive a week with only one meager meal a day, no power, running water, or comforts I’m sure someone of his status is accustomed to. Hands reached out and gathered mine in theirs, forcing me to relax and open them. Small half-moon indents appeared on my palms, and a few of them even started to bleed. Toma let out a sigh as he signaled Cris to come over.

I tried to tug them back, not wanting to be looked after right now. Only then his grip tightened, and I got a disapproving look. Cris took a seat next to me at the table taking a hand from Toma and examining it with a little crease between his brows. Reaching down into his bag, he pulled out a few supplies and got to cleaning my hands.

“You really don’t need to do that,” I said in a quiet voice as Sorin and the Commandant continued to talk.

“Are you the medic?” Cris asked, to which I shook my head. “Then I would leave such calls to them. You’ve told me stories of people you’d seen yourself dying because they didn’t look after simple wounds. Who knows when we will return to base or have the medical supplies we need if things worsen. So in my medical opinion, yes, I do think it’s needed.”

I wanted to argue with him but a hand wrapped around the back of my neck, stilling the words that were going to come out of my mouth. “Let him do his job, Dani,” Lucian ordered, his tone brokering no argument.

It would seem that I wasn’t going to win this fight, so I freed my other hand from Toma so I could offer both of them to Cris. Lucian bent down, pressed his lips to my head, and whispered. “Good girl.”

A shiver of pleasure shot down my spine at his words, making me need to bite my lip, or a whine would leak out. That was the last thing we needed, especially with the leader of the Southern Military on the phone. Something told me the Commandant wouldn’t take too kindly at getting hung up on so he wouldn’t hear the sounds I’d be making as Lucian happily attended to my needs.

The sound of someone groaning caught my attention, and I turned to see Victor staring at me. His hands fisted, face strained, and the evident outline of a hard cock was pressing at his pants. What on earth would have caused that kind of reaction?

“Thank you, Commandant. I will ensure to keep you up to date on any and all information we have in two days’ time. For now, my team and I are going to get some rest,” Sorin informed his commander.

“Alright, we will speak again in two days,” Commandant Stoll agreed. “Get your rest. We need your team in top shape as you investigate this situation. Who knows what could happen if they made it past the border and got this far into our territory. I wouldn’t be surprised if Commander Lucian came and knocked on the president's door asking for sugar at this rate.” With a laugh, the Commandant hung up the call.

“If I was going to show up at the president’s door, I think I’d rather ask for some whiskey. Maybe a nice steak dinner, but it certainly wouldn’t be sugar,” Lucian commented before looking back down at me. “However, I think the more pressing matter is why does it smell like you’re going into heat, Danella?”

“What?!” I blurted. “That’s not possible, I’ve never gone into heat, and they gave me a suppressant that should last months.”

“Little Spark, I can confirm with absolute certainty you are perfuming like crazy. Whatever he whispered in your ear flipped a goddamn switch,” Victor said. “I have never in my life been this hard before, and all that happened is I caught your scent.”

“No,” I argued, shaking my head. “You don’t understand, Victor. I don’t go into heat, like ever. Not once in my whole life has it ever happened.”

Lucian caught my chin and turned me to look at him. “He’s not lying, My Heart. You have never perfumed like this before. I know you told me you couldn't go into heat, but the reaction of these Alphas would say otherwise.”

“What are you talking about? I feel fine, there’s no excessive need. I’m not begging anyone to fuck me right here on this table, there’s no pain, and I’m completely clear-headed. I’ve seen other Omegas in heat, and I promise you, I’m not,” I explained.

“Dani, you’ve never gone into heat, not once?” Cris asked.

Lucian let me pull out of his hold to look at the Beta. “Never, I’ve been examined for everything when I was back in Oscad, but they couldn’t find anything wrong with me. They assumed I was just a late bloomer. I’m twenty-five now, and it still hasn’t happened. I would call myself a lost cause at this point. Nevertheless, Beth gave me the shot a few days after I woke up and told me it should last at least two weeks.”

“That’s true, but it only works on those who’ve gone through a heat before. Any Omega who hasn’t had their first heat must still take the daily pills. We don’t understand why the shot isn’t effective before that, but it’s something we’ve learned over the years,” Cris explained.

“Okay, that makes sense in its own odd way, but it doesn’t explain why you all think I’m going into heat,” I countered.

“I’m sorry, Dani. I wish I had an answer to that. While I’m a good field medic, I’m not a doctor who knows all the in’s and out’s of the Omega anatomy,” Cris said, his regret apparent in his expression. “What I do know is that my mother always talked about how Omegas respond to the scent of Alphas they are attracted to. Alphas are the same way. It’s the natural driving force to create a bond and pack to protect their Omega. I’m wondering if that doesn't have a large part to play in all this.”
