“I think so.” I turn to my friends. It’s still weird to me to call the whole group of guys friends, but they are. Some more than others. As much as I didn’t anticipate it, Hunter, Wes, and Holt weaseled their way into my life.

“Looks like Caleb and Jenna are getting ready to head out. We should say goodbye,” I say, watching everyone hug. Caleb has their beach bag flung over his shoulder.

“Sounds good. I’m getting hungry anyway.” Aubrey begins to paddle toward the shore.

I follow behind her. I’m not usually a beach guy, but today with her was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. So much so that I don’t mind the sand that has already taken up residence in places where sand shouldn’t be, nor do I mind all the salt water that I accidentally drank.

Chapter nine

Aubrey & Brody

Monday

Brody: I’m assuming I’ll need a suit for the wedding. What color is your dress so I can get a tie to match?

Aubrey: Happy Monday to you too. It’s pale pink, but you probably don’t need a suit. Let me ask Bri what Devon is wearing. He’s not in the wedding, either.

Brody: Okay.

Tuesday

Aubrey: Sorry, yesterday got away from me. Here’s what Devon’s wearing. *photo attachment.* The outfit was approved by Clara and Mother so something similar would probably be fine.

Brody: Okay, sounds good. Thanks.

Aubrey: You okay?

Brody: Yeah. Why?

Aubrey: You sound off.

Brody: Aubrey, it’s a text message. How do I sound off?

Aubrey: *Shrugging emoji* You just do.

Brody: I’m fine.

Aubrey: If you say so.

Thursday

Brody: Caleb invited us to his party for the fourth.

Aubrey: Sounds fun.

Brody: I’ll tell him no.

Aubrey: Why would you do that?

Brody: Because it’s after our end date.

Aubrey: So? We can still go together.

Brody: If you’re sure. It might be weird.

Aubrey: Why would it be weird?

Brody: Because the guys will want all the details. Wes will try to get us back together.
