This plane was nothing like a commercial plane or even the private planes I’d flown in with my father. It was practically a house with wings. There were couches, a big TV, a table with chairs, and through a curtain, there was also clearly a bedroom, with a full-size bed neatly made with the same dark-blue silk Carlos had on his bed at home. A clear-door refrigerator held a variety of bottled alcohol, water, and soda, and there was a kitchenette that was well stocked with snacks.

Luca flopped down on the couch, and the airhostess, Katrina, immediately started making him a glass filled with ice and bourbon.

She smiled at him. “Here you go, Mr. Guerra.”

He thanked her and motioned at Lynx. “Give him one too. A double. He’s been a ball of stress all day.”

Lynx shook his head. “I’m working.”

Luca waved off his protests. “There’s no one to protect her from up here. Have a drink.”

Lynx glanced at me, but I was too wrapped up in my own head to give him anything more than a nod. Luca was right. Lynx couldn’t protect me from anyone on this plane. He might as well indulge. We’d have to do another round of passport inspections once we got to the UK, so having him a little relaxed before then might be a good idea.

Katrina focused on me, a friendly smile on her face. “And for you, Miss Matish? I can get you anything you like.”

“Water, please,” I asked weakly.

I was glad Luca was too preoccupied by his own drink and settling into his seat to notice I hadn’t picked an alcoholic beverage.

Though I surely wanted one. My nerves were rattled, and that phone in my bag felt like it had set off the timer on a bomb.

“Katrina, where is my father?” Luca asked.

She blinked in surprise at him. “Oh, sir. I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize the senior Mr. Guerra hadn’t notified you. He decided to take an earlier flight. He and his bodyguards and I believe a new fighter have already left, at the request of Mr. MacGregor. But please don’t worry. We’ll get you and your party to Scotland immediately. It’s just the three of you plus the cabin crew. Hopefully, you won’t have missed out on anything important.”

Luca screwed up his face. “That sounds like bullshit.”

Katrina blinked. “I’m sorry?”

Luca waved a hand at her. “No, not you. I’m sure that’s what you were told. I just don’t believe a word that comes out of my father’s mouth. But clearly he didn’t want me knowing what he was doing, and that’s fine by me.” He downed his drink in a single swallow and held it out to her. “Another, please.”

She was quick to oblige him.

The captain’s voice came over an intercom, advising us to put our seat belts on, and I was surprised to find all the cushy seats had them, neatly disguised within the leather cushions. I pulled mine over my lap and fastened it, then stared out the window until we were in the sky.

I pretended I didn’t feel Lynx’s worried looks.

Once we reached cruising altitude and the captain advised we could take our seat belts off, I did so and quickly made my way to the back of the plane, searching for the bathroom.

I opened the door and let out a squeak when a big body followed me in, and locked the door behind us.

“Lynx!” I recognized his scent and the feel of him immediately. “What the hell are you doing?”

He gazed around the space. “Giving thanks this bathroom is at least four times the size of a regular airplane bathroom.”

Which still didn’t make it big. Especially with a six-foot something man in it, who clearly spent a lot of time working out.

“That still doesn’t explain what you’re doing in here. Can’t I pee in peace?”

“Not until we talk.”

“Luca is going to think we’re having sex,” I hissed at him.

“Luca had three shots of tequila while you were in that interrogation room and is already on his second bourbon. The only thing he’s thinking about is where his next drink is coming from.”

I frowned at that. “Is he okay?”

“No!” Lynx exploded, losing patience with me. “He’s not okay! He was stressed as fuck when they took you away from us. So was I! What the hell happened in there, Nyah? You came out white as a fucking ghost. If they touched you…”
