MacGregor chuckled down the line. “Is it that easy, Nyah? I deliver you a phone and some underwear and you leave Guerra to come sit on a Scottish throne?”

“If throne is code for your dick, then no, it’s definitely not that easy.”

He laughed again, but this time it was a full-belly laugh. “Carlos has his hands full with you, doesn’t he?”

I didn’t answer.

“I made some enquiries after we met. Found out he keeps you cut off from the world. No phone. No visitors.”

I wondered who in Carlos’s house was the snitch, feeding information to a man who Carlos pretended was an ally but was clearly not.

“I don’t like that he doesn’t want me to be your friend, Nyah.”

The burn on my chest throbbed, probably because I’d just been reminded it was there solely because of a conversation I’d had with this man. Because Carlos had deemed it as something more than it was. Or more likely, because MacGregor just got under Carlos’s skin in a way that me talking to Dax or Luca or Lynx didn’t.

There was a history between these two men, and I’d somehow found myself right in the middle of it.

Lucky me. “I have plenty of friends, Mr. MacGregor. I don’t need another. And I do not need you to gift me underwear.”

“But then how will you know what I want you to wear when you come to my room in Scotland?”

“I won’t be coming to your room in Scotland or anywhere else.”

He paused. “You will, Nyah Matish. You will. Because if you don’t, I might accidentally tell your husband-to-be all about the baby growing in your belly. Which would be funny, wouldn’t it? Because he spent an awful lot of time bragging about the virgin pussy he was going to devour on your wedding night.”

I froze.

MacGregor laughed again. “You’re surprised I know.”

All I could whisper was, “How?”

He clucked his tongue. “No need for you to worry about that. I have my sources. All you need to worry about right now is getting on that plane and saying thank you for the new phone I just gifted you. You’re no longer cut off from the world, Nyah. You’re free to call your friends or use the internet.”

“Or call my fiancé and tell him what you’ve done?”

“Maybe so. But then I’ll have to congratulate him on being a stepdaddy to your bastard child.” He paused. “Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl? I’d like to send him balloons, and I’m not sure if I should get blue or pink.”

My fingers trembled.

MacGregor’s voice turned serious. “Take the phone, Nyah.”

I nodded, suddenly sure there were cameras in this room somewhere and he was watching me through them. I moved toward the door, and he only confirmed it by whispering in my ear, “And the underwear.”

Luca and Lynx both rushed me as I left the interrogation room with my bag, MacGregor’s gift tucked inside it.

Lynx put a meaty arm around me, drawing me into his side and hustling me through the airport toward our gate without so much as a word. If he’d been mad at me, that was clearly over.

But it was Luca’s gaze I felt from head to toe. He eyed me the entire way with an expression I couldn’t quite decipher. I wasn’t sure if he was worried or annoyed or just relieved we were finally getting on the plane, and with only a few minutes to spare before our scheduled takeoff time.

An airport employee held a door open for us, and we crossed the tarmac with a warm breeze blowing around us. Luca led the way to a plane that was nowhere near the size of a commercial plane but wasn’t exactly small either. He climbed the stairs and greeted the captain and copilot by name, introducing me and Lynx to the cabin crew as well.

I barely heard any of it. I was so distracted by the gift-wrapped box in my bag and the fact Carlos had a mole amongst his people.

I became very aware of Lynx’s arm around me and pulled away.

He glanced down at me, his brow furrowed in confusion. “You okay?”

I didn’t say anything, just found a seat and sat in it.
