"Where to next?" I asked.
He smiled, pulling me further into the store. "Wherever you want."
By the time we made it back to the car, Jokah had so many shopping bags hanging from his arms that I couldn't help but laugh every time another one slid down his wrist. Watching him stop every few steps to readjust them only made me laugh harder.
"We look ridiculous right now," I said, adjusting my grip on the few bags he'd actually let me carry.
"We look rich."
"That too."
Once we got everything loaded into the trunk and somehow managed to get it closed, I stood there for a second, shaking my head at the absurdity of the entire afternoon.
He opened my door, and I climbed in, still laughing about the bags stacked in the trunk. He got in a second later, firing up the engine, and the second we pulled off, "Shea Butter" started playing again, and my mind went straight back to last night. The way he had taken his time with me until I couldn't think straight anymore, until my whole body gave in over and over.
My thighs tightened just thinking about it. Part of me wanted to skip the rest of this errand entirely and go straight back to his place, let him pick up right where he left off and keep me there until morning.
I giggled to myself, quiet enough that he wouldn't catch it, thinking about how well that song fits him. This man had my whole body speaking a language I didn't even know I had.
"What's funny?" he asked, glancing over.
"Nothing." I bit back a smile, staring out the window instead.
"Mmhmm."
He pulled me out of my thoughts a second later. "We heading to Walmart real quick."
I turned to look at him with a raised brow. "Oh, your rich ass shop at Walmart?"
"Hell yeah. I ain't too rich to shop at Walmart. That's my one-stop shop."
"I would've never guessed that."
"Man, they got everything under one roof. Groceries, hygiene products, whatever. I don’t have time to run to five different stores."
I shook my head, smiling as I settled back into my seat, still a little dazed from where my mind had just been.
"You're something else, Jokah."
"So, I've been told."
Walmart turned into its own kind of adventure. We had snacks piled into the cart, personal items I actually needed, more bras and panties, and a few sets of pajamas that I insisted had to be simple.
Jokah picked up a set with cartoon characters splashed across them and laughed. "These childish."
"Hey, I'm childish sometimes." I snatched them out of his hand and tossed them into the cart. "I love Walmart pajamas with cartoon characters on them. Sue me."
"You grown."
"I'm allowed to be grown and still want Minnie Mouse on my pajama pants."
He shook his head, still laughing, but let it go, tossing in a family-size bag of hot Cheetos and a case of water while I grabbed a candle that smelled like vanilla because he said it reminded him of me.
By the time we made it back to his place, the sun had already started dipping low outside. I stepped inside and looked around, taking it all in for what felt like the first time. Earlier I was too upset to pay attention to his home. Now that I did, it was impossible not to admire the place.
"Give me the full tour," I said, setting my bags down.
He showed me the rest of the penthouse, and I found myself looking around like a tourist. Every room somehow looked better than the last, and I couldn't get over how much space there was. I had never been inside a place like this before. It didn't feel flashy or overdone. It just felt like somebody had worked hard enough to buy exactly the life they wanted.
