"He took me some place downtown. We had a private room with candles and wine. He had the whole thing set up before I even walked in."

"Okay, how was the conversation?"

"Good. Easy, actually. Not what I expected."

"And?"

"And what?"

"Girl, don't play with me. That was fast. Don't tell me he got you already."

"No, fool. I didn't sleep with that man."

"Mmhmm."

"I didn't."

"I said mmhmm."

"Armani."

"I heard you the first time you lied," she laughed. "I'm just saying that a fancy dinner with candles and private rooms usually leads to the bedroom and bumping uglies."

"Well, this one didn't."

"So, what did happen?"

"We just talked. He asked about me. Actually, he listened when I answered instead of just waiting for his turn to talk."

"That's rare."

"It really is."

"So, you like him."

"I didn't say all that."

"You ain't have to."

I let that sit for a second, while staring at the ceiling instead of answering. "I'm getting ready for bed. I got work in the morning."

"Mmhmm, running from the truth. I see you."

"Goodnight, Armani."

"Night, hoe. Love you."

"Love you too."

I hung up and changed into my pajamas, the conversation still replaying in my head as I climbed into bed and pulled the covers up. My phone buzzed on the nightstand right as I got comfortable.

I set the phone down on my chest, after staring at the screen a second longer than I needed to. A smile crept across my face before I could stop it. Then I closed my eyes and let myself drift off, still smiling.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I was somewhere deep in my sleep when I felt his hands sliding under the hem of my shirt. My mind was still foggy and caught somewhere between dreaming and waking, before his mouth found my neck.

"Jokah," I whispered, barely awake.
