"And you are loving every minute of it."
"I am not."
"Mm-hmm... but I bet you ate his food."
"I had to eat!"
"Damn right you did. Hell, I would've got two plates and one to go."
I laughed.
"I know you would've."
"So, where are you headed?"
"I was thinking about stopping by Mama's. Are you home?"
"When aren’t you thinking about stopping by Mama's?" she laughed. "Come on. I'm already here."
"She cooking?"
"Girl, when ain't she cooking?"
Twenty minutes later, I pulled into my mother's driveway. Before I could make it to the front door, I smelled fried chicken and immediately knew what type of dinner she was cooking…collard greens, mac and cheese, candied yams, and cornbread. I closed my eyes.
"Lord... thank You."
The front door was unlocked like always. "I'm here."
"In the kitchen!" Mama called.
I rounded the corner and smiled. My mom stood at the stove with an apron tied around her waist, moving between three pots like she was preparing Sunday dinner. She looked up and smiled.
"Hey, baby."
I walked over and hugged her. "Hey, Mama."
“Why cooking all this food on a Monday?”
“Since we didn’t have Sunday dinner yesterday, I’m making up for it today. You hungry?"
"You know I am."
She kissed my forehead before pointing toward the sink. "Wash your hands."
I laughed. "Yes, ma'am."
Armani was already sitting at the island eating like she had been starving for weeks.
"You ain't even wait?"
She shrugged. "I was tasting it."
Mama looked over. "You been tasting for twenty minutes."
"I had to make sure it was seasoned."
"It was seasoned before you got here."
