“I need to get back to the men. Let me know if ye need anything, lad.”
And with that, Honey turned on his heel and she was alone once again in the hallway. She would have to be more wary of Sweeney. He seemed to be the most unsavory character she’d ever had the displeasure of meeting, aside from Storm. Which surprised her because Honey looked to be the type of man that would only hire honorable men to work on his crew. Mayhap he saw something in the weasel that she didn’t.
She walked to the galley, swaying slightly with the rock of the boat. The gentle rocking calming her nerves after the off-putting encounter with Sweeney.
He was an odd man and so far, she’d found each of their meetings unsettling.
He was definitely someone she would need to keep her eye on.
Later in thegalley, Seonag was taking stock of the items they had on hand when Mac entered and studied her silently while he stood leaning against the wall.
“Can I help ye with something?” she asked, tucking the trenchers into a low cupboard and straightening.
“Nay, just seeing how ye’re faring, lad.” He chewed on a piece of straw tucked into the corner of his mouth.
“’Tis been an exciting day, to say the least.”
“Aye,” Mac agreed. “I’ll leave ye to yer duties. I know ye’ve work to do.”
As he turned, Seonag noticed the tear in his tunic.
“Mac?”
He turned. “Aye?”
She dipped her head in his direction. “If ye bring yer tunic to me later, I can mend that tear for ye.”
He raised a brow in question and looked over his shoulder at the tear. “Ye mend, too?”
Seonag shrugged.
“Ye are an odd lad, Sean,” Mac said. “I’ll drop my tunic off to ye later.”
Mac left and she was once again alone.
Had she made a mistake admitting she could sew? She sighed aloud in the empty room. Being on a ship, her cooking skills were limited since food supplies were low. There just wasn’t that much for her to prepare and cook. Mending would keep her mind occupied.
With nothing left to do in the galley for the rest of the day, she decided to check on Duncan. She hoped he wasn’t angry with her for taking over his duties. The last thing she wanted to do was take his work away from him.
But Honey had commanded he take time to regain his wits. That wasn’t something she had suggested.
Before Seonag made it to the sleeping quarters, she spotted Duncan in deep conversation with another crewman she didn’t know the name of. It was no surprise to anyone that he wasn’t resting.
She cleared her throat, alerting the two that she was there.
Duncan looked her over and furrowed his brow. “I knew ye couldna handle feeding the men. What do ye need help with?” he asked, a knowing smile lifting the corner of his mouth.
“I’ve no need of help,” she answered and the smile on the man’s face turned into a frown. “All the men are fed for now and I’ve tidied up the space. I was,” his look was unnerving, “just ensuring ye are feeling well.”
“Och, aye, I feel fine, lad.” He held up his hand, the dressing showing a bit of blood seeping through. “’Tis naught but a small cut.”
“I thought ye’d be resting as the captain instructed.”
Duncan roared with laughter. “Over this? Nay. I’ve had much worse.”
She nodded. “Weel, I was just checking. I’m glad ye’ve almost recovered.” Seonag left the men to get back to whatever conversation they were so engrossed in when she’d interrupted them.
She needed to find something to do. She was feeling restless. Every crewman had a job they were assigned, but she had nothing.
