“Fun, Calla.”

“But you two?—”

“Are enjoying each other’s company without worrying too much about it,” I finish for her. “We got this.”

Except that I am worrying about it, and I’m not so sure I got this.

I want to have this.

I do.

Calla nods, but I can tell she has more to say.

“You don’t have to worry about me or Greer, Calla. Now go enjoy your reception. Your husband is waiting to take you on the dance floor.”

She watches me for a moment longer.

“Please don’t hurt her,” she says, taking a step back.

“I won’t.”

My sister forces a smile. “Or at least you won’t intend to.”

She turns before I can say anything else.

Of course I don’t intend to hurt Greer. That’s the exact reason why she deserves better. She deserves a man who isn’t scared to take a chance on love. Whose fear of losing someone again doesn’t take over every single happy thought. A man who can give her everything she wants in life. A man who doesn’t have to fake date her as an excuse to touch her.

Fuck.

I have to let her go.

I glance up to see her watching me as Grey attempts to do the moonwalk in front of her. She waves for me to join them, and despite all my thoughts just now, I get up and do the slide until I reach them. Grey hoots and the rest of the guys who are on the dance floor cheer.

If tonight is the last night with Greer before I let her go, I want it to be one to remember.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

GREER

I wish I could tell you exactly when in the evening that I decided tonight was the night Simon and I needed to talk, but I can’t. I just know I went to Calla and Beck’s reception to have fun, and now I’m riding in the passenger side of Simon’s truck worrying about what I’m going to say to him. Or how I’m going to say it.

Maybe it was when he held me on the dance floor or the kisses he snuck when no one was looking, or maybe it was the way his hand never left mine. But something clicked in my brain and this right here, nights like this, are exactly what I want. No other man is going to make me feel this way. Ever. I know it.

There has been something forming between Simon and me this entire summer, and this last week only confirmed what I refused to accept. Simon is the guy I want. He’s the man I need.

He’s never been one to date, and I know why. But this thing between us—it feels real. I can’t be alone in that feeling.

Heck, this is how effortless being in a relationship should be, right? I’m starting to think I was given a long list of horrible dates to bring me to this moment. Because Simon and I need each other. We can help each other.

It has to be us.

“All right, you haven’t spoken a word since we left. What’s going on in that head of yours?” Simon says quietly as he pulls onto our street.

I glanced at the back seat where Grey fell asleep almost instantly after he got in.

I smile. “He looks about five years younger when he sleeps.”

Simons doesn’t say anything, but he’s watching me watch his son.
