“Greer, you don’t need to take care of us. I can do this. I’ve done it before on my own, and I’ll do it again, sick or not.”
He sits up, so I march right back into the bedroom. I place a hand on his shoulder to gently push him back down.
“I know you can, Simon, but those were your pre-Greer days. You’re stuck with me now. Sick or not. Now lay back down. I’ll be right back.”
He doesn’t say anything. He just gazes into my eyes, then gives a slight nod.
“All right then,” I say.
By the time I make it back to the room, both of them are asleep again.
I know this isn’t the time to think this, but damn, seeing Simon snuggle his son has my ovaries working overtime. He’s an amazing dad, and that quality is just one of many about Simon that turns me on.
Damnit.
I don’t want to catch feelings for Simon. Yes, I can be attracted to him and want to fool around, but real feelings aren’t good. He’s never once mentioned wanting to settle down. Not ever.
Which, clearly, is the exact opposite of what I want.
But maybe he just needed to find the right woman.
Maybe that woman could be me?
CHAPTER TWENTY
SIMON
I feel like an elephant is sitting on my head and a lion used my throat as a scratching post.
I hate being sick. It’s the absolute worst thing ever. No, scratch that. Seeing my son sick is the worst thing ever.
Grey!
My eyes spring open, but it isn’t Grey who I see next to me in bed. Nope. It’s Greer. Greer propped next to me reading my last release. She flips a page, her hand touching her bottom lips as she takes a deep breath.
She hasn’t noticed that I’m awake, so I take a moment to study her while she reads. Her lips smile softly, and I swear she pulls the book closer, her eyes scanning the words as if she’s trying to set a world record for reading. Her hair is pulled into a messy bun, little pieces falling out to frame her face. The pink gloss on her lips is nothing short of distracting.
I scan lower, taking in the low vee dip of her olive-green sleeveless tank top. Her legs are under the covers, so I can’t see anything else.
She’s gorgeous, and every time I look at her, it’s as if my mind can’t believe this woman actually enjoys being near me. Could actually want to kiss me. Want to be with me. My heart warms. Seeing her as soon as I woke up, it feels right.
But she deserves someone who can give her forever.
Even when my mind says I’m not allowed to think that, I do.
I just don’t know what to do about it. Or if I even should.
“What page are you on?” I ask, and she startles, tossing the book out in front of her.
“What? I don’t know.”
I chuckle, pushing up to a seated position and glancing at the clock.
“Fuck, Greer, it’s five in the afternoon. Where’s Grey? Did we sleep all day?”
I start to toss my leg over the edge, but she stops me.
“Stay here. He’s fine. His fever broke around three, and he’s downstairs watching TV and eating some chicken noodle soup.”
