“That might be a good idea.” I fully focused on the area and decided that this would be the perfect place. It had plenty of room for the things we came up with, and space just in case we wanted to add something later.

We walked a little further into the park, and Mycah stopped. She turned to face me with that smile I’d grown accustomed to already.

“This is perfect, Kairo.” She pointed out where she thought we should put certain things. The entire time, her face lit up, and I was happy that I asked her to help me with it. It gave me an opportunity to be in her presence, and I needed the help anyway.

“I think it’s perfect too.” I looked down at her, but she was too busy looking around the park to notice.

“I’m excited!” She clapped her hands, and I just shook my head and chuckled.

She didn’t realize that seeing her so happy did something to me. It made me feel like something in my chest opened, and I wanted to provide more happiness for her.

I had to look away from her because I was feeling too much too fast.

“I think it’ll be a good turnout.”

“Me too. So, what made you become a police officer? And how did you get tasked with doing the summer bash?”

Mycah and I walked further into the park. She didn’t seem to be in a rush to leave, and I certainly wasn’t.

“I wanted to be a police officer since I was a child. My grandfather was one, and it’s my way of honoring him. As far as the bash, I don’t even know. Last year, it was up to me, and I didn’t want to do it, but I did. Somehow, it fell on me again this year. I’m not mad at it though.” I smirked at her.

“Well, I think it’s going to be the best it has ever been.” She beamed. “I also think that’s admirable that you wanted to take after your grandfather.” Her arms were behind her back with her hands clasped together.

The way the sun hit her face made her skin glow.

“Thanks. How did you get into assistant work?”

“Honestly, it wasn’t the plan. The police department where I lived had an opening, and I applied. I ended up liking it, and here I am. When I went to college, I wasn’t sure what to major in, so I ended up going for business administration. I figured something was better than nothing, and there were plenty of jobs I could get with my degree.”

“There is nothing wrong with that. Is there something else you’d rather be doing?”

We came up on a bench, and since Mycah had heels on, I decided we could sit for a bit. She sat next to me, and her scent flooded my senses. Every day, she smelled different, and I liked every scent she wore.

“Is it sad to say that there isn’t? I thought I would have wanted something else, but I truly like what I do.”

I turned a little to face her. She had her hand shielding her eyes from the sun as she looked at me.

“It’s not sad. If everyone felt like they should be doing something else, there would be a lot of jobs that weren’t being done. The important thing is if you’re happy with what you do. You also have to be able to support yourself with it. There’s always room for growth in any profession, if that’s what you want to do. At the end of the day, it’s whatever your heart desires and no one else’s.”

“You’re right. With me being in a new town, I wanted to do something I was familiar with. Maybe after I’m fully settled, I could find something else.”

“I wouldn’t want you to leave, but I would understand if you did.”

I had gotten used to seeing her face every morning, and I looked forward to it. Every day, on the way to work, I wondered what she would wear or what scent she would smell like for the day. I was tweaking, and I knew it, but I couldn’t stop it either. I wasn’t trying to.

“Who knows.” She shrugged.

“Not a soul.” I chuckled, and she giggled.

We sat on the bench and just talked. We shared childhood stories; she told me things about her hometown. I had never been, but it wasn’t that far from the Valley, and she said her parents and best friend were still there.

I felt relaxed when I talked to Mycah. Shit just seemed to flow easily. At times, we would get quiet, but it wasn’t awkward. We both seemed to just enjoy each other’s company. It had been a long time since I had meaningful conversations with a woman. The sexual tension was there, but I wasn’t trying to rush things.

“Thanks for helping me with the event.”

Mycah probably hadn’t noticed that we sat so close our knees touched.

“You’re welcome.”
