“We’re going to intercept a truck with a new supply of weapons and ammo,” Adam said.
“Is it Dorian’s guys?” she asked.
“No, upstate suppliers,” Adam said. “We just need to make the intercept.”
Paul had become an awkward intruder, and his face was in a wince when Mercedes finally turned to him. “You decrypted the codes?”
“I did, every shipment Blake has coming in he can’t hide from us now,” Paul confirmed.
“Good.”
She whipped back to Adam, looking over her shoulder with a harsh stare, but he only smirked at her. She was being harder to him than usual, and he was looking at her like he knew. Like he knew that her hardness meant she was really softening, and trying to hide it.
“And why are there two cars?” Mercedes asked.
“You’ll see,” Adam said. “Come on, let’s go.”
* * *
An hour out of Ridge City, Adam spotted the semi-truck on the freeway. Sent by legacies in Darton to Ridge City, care of Dorian Blake, to supply guns, inside the trailer was an arsenal. Blake’s reach inside Ridge City was so vast that there was no other way to buy arms; even the police bought their weapons directly from Dorian Blake.
Corrupt motherfuckers. Like he could talk.
Next to him, Mercedes was at the wheel of a white RX-7 convertible, while Dan sat in the back. In the identical car traveling directly behind theirs, Paul took the wheel with Carlos in the passenger seat.
“Up ahead,” Adam said. The stocked armory semi-truck was guarded by two smaller vehicles that traveled in front and behind of it.
“Got it,” Mercedes said, her instinct clearly taking over as she pushed ahead, wind rippling over the fabric of the currently closed top of the car. Her movements were so swift, so fast, that the guard cars couldn’t keep up with her or even anticipate her arrival as she slammed past them and settled in to drive parallel to the trailer.
Adam looked back with a laugh as the rear guard car swerved like it’d been hit. It hadn’t, but its driver was panicking anyway. It wasn’t until Paul roughed its bumper that it settled back into line.
“You got that?” Dan buzzed through the radio.
“We’re on it,” Carlos replied, and Paul’s car slammed once more into the rear guard car to keep its focus away from the real threat.
Adam narrowed his eyes on the front car, which hadn’t yet moved out of formation.
“You don’t have long,” Mercedes said. She pressed a button and the roof lowered, descending into a spot in the back of the vehicle.
The semi was trying to push them off the road, acting out since its guards were otherwise occupied, but Mercedes just swerved left and right effortlessly as if she were bored by the whole ordeal.
“Someone is panicking,” Dan laughed as he peered into the cab of the semi.
“Well, if he isn’t yet, he will be in a minute,” Mercedes said, gripping the wheel so hard that the whites of her knuckles showed. With one strong rip, Mercedes slammed into the side of the semi.
Wouldn’t matter how many times she did that, though, it was guaranteed to get the driver’s heart moving.
With the force of the impact, it was like they were magnetically bound to the trailer, clutching as they drove in synchronous movements.
Taking the cue for what it was, Adam undid his seatbelt and stood upright, climbing over to straddle the driver’s seat. One foot against the windowsill, the other balanced on the center console, Mercedes sitting between his legs and his hands braced on his knee to admire the mighty jump ahead.
Yes, yes, yes! He loved this. His adrenaline was practically screaming in his head and purring beneath him. He was a sick, sick man, sure, but he wasn’t ashamed.
Gunfire whipped past his face, but he just frowned while Mercedes and Dan ducked. Even as the convertible swerved across the road, Adam remained standing on the windowsill with Mercedes controlling the car beneath him.
“That fucker nearly hit me…what adick!” Dan said, trying and failing to scramble out of the back of the RX-7 as Adam pulled him in by the collar and held the reckless little idiot still.
Paul neutralized the threat, all while still driving his own car, and gave Adam a hearty thumbs up. He had to admit, it looked a bit weird on a man that big and dangerous.
