“I’m going to let you go and you’re going to stay in the fucking car.” Adam shook his head at Dan and released him.

Adam nearly stumbled when Mercedes slammed into the side of the semi again, but she just smiled up at him with a look that said she really wasn’t sorry.

Again, Adam braced for the jump.

He only allowed himself a sharp inhale before he leapt through the open air and onto the side of the cab. His grip secured him to the door by only the handle and the sheer might of his legs digging into the metal.

Holding his gun one-handed, he shot the passenger side window out, opening the threshold between him and the occupant’s relentless screaming. He reached in to unlock and then open the door. It flung open, sending Adam flying along, too, holding on for his life.

It didn’t falter him, though. He reached forward and pulled the passenger from the vehicle, throwing him out to fly away like discarded paperwork.

Adam slid into the cab and closed the door behind him. Leaning his back up against the door to brace himself, he stretched his legs and kicked, forcing the driver out of the other side of the vehicle. Smiling, Adam took control of the truck and continued its trail along the highway.

Okay, now all they had to do was get the truck back in one fucking piece. Couldn’t be too hard, right? How difficult could it be to drive a semi-truck?

* * *

Mercedes swore when she noticed a parade of enemy vehicles rushing in. Fucking reinforcements. Darton people were too rich.

“We have company.” Carlos buzzed into the radio.

“Yeah, we got that… thanks, buddy,” Dan said sarcastically in reply.

The cars joined them on the highway in a matter of seconds, flanking them from all sides until they could only see black.

Gunfire wasn’t far behind the pursuit, and Mercedes could barely see the road ahead as she ducked to avoid it. Carlos and Dan did their best to return the fire while Mercedes and Paul swerved to protect Adam in the trailer. But Adam was swerving all over the goddamn road, too.

Fuck, he had no idea how to drive that truck, did he? That was the last time she was letting him make the plan.

The return fire didn’t slow the new enemies down. It was obvious that they would rather see the trailer burn than see it fall into the wrong hands. She had to think on her feet, or they’d quickly be outnumbered.

“Remember the spins we used to do?” Mercedes asked Dan.

He nodded. “I can do it.”

“Move ahead, Paul,” Mercedes said into the radio. “We got this.”

Paul’s car sped ahead to take direct defense of Adam. The trailer itself bumped and jumped along the highway as Adam tried to control it without running it off the road.

As Paul’s car sped ahead, Mercedes dropped back and threw the car into a spin, drifting from forward into reverse and rolling backward past the enemy cars.

She held on tight to the wheel and the stick to maintain control, her tires smoking into the asphalt as easily as a cigarette butt stains fabric. Dan lined up his automatic and unleashed an onslaught of bullets while she drove donuts into the road, maintaining pace so some cars were forced off the road, and others were taken out by Dan.

With a spin from reverse back into forward, and a few steadying swerves, Mercedes’s car settled nicely along the other side of the truck. All that remained was the original front guard car, the others had been flipped, tipped, and upturned on the roadside.

“Well done,” Mercedes said as Dan joined her in the front.

“And you.” He took his imaginary hat off to her.

“One more at the front,” Carlos buzzed into the radio to remind them.

Mercedes and Paul came speeding up on either side of the trailer to reach the lone car that was left. The one that had remained in formation even as all the other shit went down behind it. Would’ve been smarter to run. What was there really left to guard anyway?

Mercedes and Paul were positioned on either side and sandwiched the loner in between their two vehicles. They squeezed so hard that they had full control over the vehicle in their center, leaving it nowhere to go but where they desired.

Carlos and Dan loaded their guns and simultaneously shot the driver and passenger just as Mercedes and Paul released it.

After more steadying swerves, they pulled in to drive alongside of each other, Adam following along in the struggling semi being driven by him. They were now alone on the road.
