Rory’s eyes widen before he quickly recovers. “There’s like thirty bedrooms in this house.”

“You’re deflecting.”

“Where else would I sleep?”

“I don’t know, where?” Brendan accuses again, and I don’t like it.

“He’s scared to be alone,” I growl.

“Well, it sounds like he isn’t alone, but that he’s with a dangerous man.”

“He’s not in danger when he’s with me.” I kiss Rory’s hand, and he blushes.

“So where did he sleep if he’s with you?”

“At my estate.”

“Where?” he asks sternly.

“I slept in Daddy’s bed,” Rory practically shouts and then looks nervous before he gives me the biggest smile.

I bend over to kiss him quick. “Good boy,” I whisper.

“Daddy—” Brendan makes a bunch of strange noises before he tries again. “Daddy? Rory? I— you… What?”

“Lex is my Daddy, and I’m staying in his mobster mansion because I feel safe here.”

Brendan makes some more gasping noises before he asks Rory to give us a minute. Rory just shrugs and leaves the bedroom.

“How much trouble would I get into if I threatened you to stay the fuck away from my brother?” he asks calmly.

“I’d retire you with a bullet,” I answer, equally calm.

“Not if you want to keep Rory happy,” he answers smugly.

“Good thing you aren’t going to warn me to stay the fuck away from your brother then.”

“So you’re what now? Dating?”

Dating is too weak a word. He’s mine, and I’ll kill anyone who touches him, but Brendan won’t understand yet. “Yes.”

“Then I’m obligated to give you the ‘if you hurt him’ speech.”

“If I hurt Rory, you have my permission to kill me.”

“Good, because as a doctor, I don’t need a gun to kill you.”

I chuckle. “That boy deserves nothing but sweetness and comfort for the rest of his life.”

Brendan sighs. “He does. Take good care of him while I’m gone.”

“I will. Take as much time as you need.”

He huffs a laugh. “Trying to keep me away for longer?”

“Yes.” I want Rory all to myself.

“At least you’re honest. Tell Rory I said good night.”
