Page 69 of Milk for His Daddy

I miss my Daddy.

He really is the best. I want to text him and tell him thank you, but I’d like to get started on something, and I can show him later when he calls. He texted me when he landed so I knew he was safe, but he went right to work. We’re going to video call later.

I dig around in the bag, and I can’t even imagine how he knew what to order and how much all of this cost.

I swear, this man.

Okay, let’s separate them so I know what I have.

There’s a bunch of canvases. Some are small and some are medium, but there’s one large one. I’ll start with that.

Now the paint.

There’s oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolors, and something called gouache. I’ll have to look that one up later.

I decide to start with the acrylic paint because it seems the easiest to use.

What to paint, though?

Nothing jumps to mind right away, so I take a pretty blue color and paint a line on the canvas. Not bad, so I grab a green and paint another line.

This is fun!

So I keep painting, even though I wouldn’t call it a picture. The colors are pretty, so I keep blending.

My phone ringing startles me from my work. When I step back to grab it, I notice my work. It’s not too bad, and the colors feel happy, free.

Smiling, I answer the phone.

“Hi, Daddy. How was your flight?”

“So fucking long. I mean sooooo long.”

“Did you sleep or watch a movie?”

“I did both, but still, long.”

“What’s going on at work?”

“A bunch of idiots did some idiot stuff, and now I need to untangle their mess and figure out what they did because it’s fucked.”

“That sucks.”

“Yeah, I’m getting tired of all this bullshit.”

“Maybe it’s just the time of year?”

“No. They’re stupid every day of the year.”

I laugh. “That’s mean.”

“It’s also true.”

“I’m sorry you’re not having any fun. Would you like to see what I’ve been doing?”

His face lights up. “Of course!”

“First of all, thank you for my present.”
