And below it:

I choose her.

She closes the notebook. Looks up at me. The silver streak falls across her forehead. Her eyes are clear. Her mouth is soft. Her hands, resting on the table beside the closed notebook, are perfectly still.

"Coffee?" she says.

"Please."

She pours. I sit across from her. We drink. The marsh glows gold through the kitchen window. The morning is warm and bright and the house is quiet and the clubs are in their slots — except the three I moved, which she will discover and correct within the hour — and the empty shelf holds nothing.

Not yet.

But the notebook on the table, open to a page that contains no strategy and no course map and no probability calculation — just two sentences in the handwriting of a woman who has spent her life converting the unmeasurable into the precise — that notebook belongs on the shelf.

And I think, sitting across from her in the morning light, drinking coffee from the cup she poured:

Some things cannot be measured.

Some things do not require a read.

Some things you simply choose, and the choosing is the shot, and the shot is good.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Nerys

The formal clearance arrives on a Tuesday.

Phaedra reads it to me over the phone — the language is bureaucratic and precise and contains the phrasesno evidence of improper influence, fabrication confirmed through forensic analysis, andthe matter is considered closed. The tour's statement will be published tomorrow. Sorrel Khatri's outlet will run a piece contextualizing the fabrication. Three other publications have agreed to print retractions.

Jocelyn Brand has been terminated from the production company. Callum Webb has been dismissed. The documentary has been shelved. Saskia has been offered a settlement for wrongful termination after providing the audio evidence, which she has accepted with the stipulation that no confidentiality clause prevents her from discussing what happened.

"It's over," Phaedra says.

"The investigation is over. The discussion of whether I manipulated a younger woman will continue in comment sections and broadcast panels for the foreseeable future."

"The discussion will fade. Discussions always fade when the facts are boring."

"The facts of my exoneration are not boring."

"They're procedurally correct. Procedurally correct is the definition of boring. The scandal was interesting. The resolutionis paperwork. In six months, the dominant narrative will be: Nerys Quillan was falsely accused, the accuser was fired, the caddie relationship continues. That's not a story anyone wants to tell twice."

Phaedra is right. She is constitutionally incapable of being wrong about narrative dynamics, which is one of the reasons she's an effective attorney and an uncomfortable friend.

"The new contract is ready for review," she says. "One-year renewable. All previous protections intact. I've added the clauses you requested — scheduled relationship check-ins, the pause provision, the separation provision. Bisi has reviewed from Tala's side. Both parties can sign whenever you're ready."

"I'll review it today."

"Nerys."

"Yes."

"The contract is excellent. The protections are real. The framework is sound. But the contract is the second thing you need to do. The first thing is something the contract cannot provide."

"I know."

"Do you? Because you've spent four weeks rebuilding the professional architecture, and the professional architecture was never what broke."
