“Are we really doing this right now? We’re going to be late.”
“You’re always late,” I countered. “Why is today different?”
“It’s not.”
“Then tell me,” I repeated. “Why are you resisting this?”
“I’m not resistingthis.” She motioned between us. “You know I want you. I think that’s pretty obvious. We talk every day, we sleep together, I spend the night, you’re here now.”
“But I’m not your boo.”
“You’re my boo, okay!” she shouted. “You’re more than my boo. But, honestly, I…” She swallowed visibly. “It’s overwhelming how much I want your mind and your body. I want youtoomuch.”
“That’s a problem for you?”
“Of course it is.”
It wasn’t funny, but I couldn’t help but laugh. “How is that a problem?”
“Because it just is.”
“It’s not,” I argued. “I know what the problem is.”
“What is it, then? Since you know everything.”
“You. You’re overthinking it.” Unable to help myself, I kissed her. Hard. And slow.
She sagged against the counter. “You did that on purpose.”
I nodded. “I did. Because I’m sick of this shit. There’s no question here. I’m your guy. You’re my girl.”
“No.”
“No?” I laughed.
Her gaze fell to my lips. “It’s not that simple.” She ducked under my arms and bolted to the other side of the room. “I make a living being The Breakup Expert. My credibility is based on the fact that I’m a badass single woman and okay with it. I’m trying to ride the wave ofIt’s Not Me, It’s Youall the way to the bank. I already have a book deal, and I’m trying for a movie deal. When my clients see me, they want that snark, thatfuck-all-mencandor. I can’t ride off into the sunset with you and be happy. I have a brand to protect.”
“Bullshit.” I approached her. “You’ve created a persona that’s been very lucrative for you. I get it. But why does that mean you can’t be happy with someone? Make that make sense, because it just doesn’t.”
She rested her hand on her forehead. “We have to go.”
“No, we’re going to finish this.”
“And if I say no, we’re not?”
“Then, you can go to the cooking class by yourself.”
Blake muttered a curse and plopped down on the couch. “Fine, Lennox. I don’t know what you want from me.”
“It’s not obvious to you?”
She gave me a sidelong glance. “Maybe not.”
“I’ve been clear in my intentions from the very beginning. I don’t think anyone expects you to stay single so your fans feel better about breaking up with their boyfriends or their husbands.” I sat next to her and pulled her on my lap. “I know you care about me.”
She lifted her eyes, holding my gaze. “I do.”
“You said you didn’t know what I wanted from you. Well, I need something more than thiswe’re friendsbullshit. Can you give me that?”
