“He’s my bestfriend, and I’m trying not to dwell on thinking about him and the past. I’m going to find him and things will be perfect,” I say with all the false confidence I can muster.
“I don’t know if it helps, but after JP told us about Lynx being able to shift into other forms and a guy our age, I’ve asked the animals that I’ve come in contact with to be on the lookout for him,” he tells me, his voice ringing with sincerity that makes up for all of his past deeds. I swoon a little, and I’m about to hug him when he opens his mouth and ruins it.
“So does this mean I get a private show of those tighter clothes?” he says with a straight face.
Rolling my eyes, I turn my back on him for a split second to give me room to pace while I come up with names, when I hear the bushes rustle. Spinning around, I see a black wolf standing before me and Knox is gone.
Knox
“Puppy!” Rez shrieks and lunges for us for a split second before holding herself back. It isn’t the first time she's met him, but at least this time she doesn’t have Professor Girdwood spitting out instructions, the elitist asshole. She’s giving us her full focus and we can’t help but preen under her attention. I watch as she can barely stop herself from launching at my wolf.
Bending down to our level she continues gushing. “Well aren’t you a cutie! Definitely better company than Knox, that’s for sure,” she giggles. Probably doing it to drive me nuts, and it’s working. While I’m slightly miffed, my wolf lets out a snort, laughing with her, and she smiles at his agreement.
Of course, he would take her side.
Rez gives us a curious look and starts calling out different names.
“Buttercup?”
Really? We shake our head.
“Dribben?”
Again, we shake our head.
“Blaze?”
My wolf growls at the offending name. Of course Rez would have no idea that the name is associated with a complete prick in another pack. There’s no way we would agree to that one, but we shake our head to ease the sting of his initial reaction.
“Pom-Pom?”
This time, we let out a huff. If we keep going this way, it’s gonna take us forever. Picking up on our vibes, Rez shoots off names in rapid succession as we huff and puff and shake our heads.
After a few minutes of Rez pacing while throwing out names, she turns and gives us another concentrated look.
“I’m not giving up, you know!”
Fine by me. I’ll do this all day if it means I get to spend it with her. I almost hope this takes a while, just so we have to spend another day together.
“Dingus?”
Really? We give her a blank look.
“Fluffers?”
My wolf perks up and I feel his pleasure through our bond. No no no no.
We are NOT going to go by Fluffers. Knowing her, she’ll try to call ME that, not just my wolf.
The damn traitor starts wagging his tail and rolls over, exposing his belly as Rez squeals and laughs as she runs over to hug us.
“Yes! I love that name. Fluffers! Oh my God, it’s just so cute.” Thrilled with the situation, she jumps up and does a little dance.
It’s the perfect distraction for my wolf—no way I’m calling himFluffers—so I can pull back the control easily while I shift back.
“NO,” I simply state, crossing my arms over my broad chest. I thought this naming thing was a good idea, but that was before I knew my wolf was really a pussy cat. Really? Fluffers? He sounds like some type of simpleton pet that would just curl up and play with yarn, or just a complete idiot. My wolf yips at the comparison, but I stick with my decision.
Rez spins around and pins me with a look of disbelief. “What?”
