As they fight with the boulder, I slowly turn around to see if my eyes can pick up anything. Doubtful since I don’t think that’s one of the powers I’ve developed, though I still give it a shot.Shit, I still need to tell the guys I have powers, unpredictable and with no idea how they work, but magic nonetheless.Sticking my arms out so I don’t faceplant into the wall, I walk to the back of thecaveand feel along the wall.
I wish I had explored more, but it just looked like a decent-sized cave. I hear the guys chuckling before they speak.
“Rez, what are you doing?” Knox asks. I can hear the humor in his voice. “You look ridiculous.”
“Well, excuse me, Mr. I-can-see-in-the-dark. I can’t, and I hate just feeling worthless, so let me do something,” I growl out.
The snickering stops and they apologize, which is smart because I was going to start denying sex.
“I’m sorry, Rez, but do you really think you’re going to find something that we didn’t already look for,” Knox offers.
I swear this man is walking on thin ice.
I turn to address him and something catches my eye. “Look! There’s something here,” I hoot with excitement.
“I don’t see anything, Rez,” Knox says, leaning into me.
“Well, try looking again, there’s a glimmer of light, or lighter darkness? I guess,” I state.
“Well, my night vision doesn’t see it,” he remarks and I scoff.
“Then maybe switch it to human vision because it’s there, Mister,” I say, walking along the edge and finding an opening.
“Holy shit!” Knox lets out in awe.
“TOLD YA!” I can’t help but rub it in.
“Hey, babycakes, at least let one of us take the lead, okay? We can see and make sure you don’t run into something,” Ryker offers, and I feel him cop a feel as he comes up behind me.
“Now that’s not how to talk to a lady,” I mock, sticking out my tongue and yelping when someone gently bites down on it. “Hey!”
Both of them snicker.
“This isn’t fair. I need Moni. I hope she’s okay.”
“I’m sure she is,” Knox says and grabs my hand.
It’s a slow process as it stays the same level of dark, walking down the tunnels where it’s unnaturally quiet until my heart jumps when the walls shake from the storm. The longer we move in the uncomfortable silence, the more I feel on edge, like something is going to happen. I don’t know how to explain it but something big is going to happen.
“Rez? Kitten? You okay?” Knox stops, picking up on my feelings.
Damn. I didn’t realize I was feeling it so deeply.
“No—at least I don’t think so,” I say, pulling back on my hand and stopping Knox.
Wrapping my arms around myself, tears gather in my eyes and I start rocking.
“Hey,” Knox says as the lighter flicks on in Ryker’s hand. “What’s wrong?” He reaches up and wipes away the tears I didn’t know I was crying.
“I—I—” I just shake my head and let it fall back down to my chest.
“Listen, Rez. Let us help you. Whatever you're experiencing might help us. Remember, you’re not a human; you might be coming into your powers,” Ryker reassures me.
“Correction. Iamcoming into my powers. I was able to shield myself in Combat Class, and I threw the Queen Harpy herself into the river. So maybe…Ugh. I—I don’t know how to explain it, but something big is going to happen.” Knox and Ryker give each other a look before turning back to me. “I know it sounds crazy, but I had the same feeling before the attack on the Hub,” I confess as I hold my breath, waiting for their reactions.
I feel a sense of pride through my connection with Knox before he nods his head and says, “Okay, then I’m going to shift for more protection.” A sigh of relief leaves me and my shoulders relax knowing they are taking me seriously.
Knox drops to all fours and in a blink, I’m staring at Fluffers.
