ChapterSeven
MY KNOTTY KNIGHT
Rez
Iwatch in horror from above as ten cloaked figures approach my dorm room from the stairwell. What the fuck?
‘Is this a vision?’I inquire.
Glancing over, I spot JP next to me, but he looks more like a floating ghost with a translucent body. Glancing down at my own body, I find I’m the same way. Oh, sweet baby Jesus in bubble wrap, I have to be dead.
‘You’re not dead, ma chérie. This is a vision of that night.’
With JP’s words, another horror overcomes me. No! I can’t handle going through this again.
Despite my wishes, a crash brings me back to the chaos below my floating body. Two men start ramming their beefy shoulders into Knots, trying to bust through. A part of me is struck with horror at their audacity to try to break into my safe place, but pride fills my heart as I see how Knots is taking the blows.
‘Try as you might fuckers, I’m tougher than you all!’Knots laughs as they grunt and continue their attack on the door. A scrawny looking man runs past the two burly ones and approaches the door frame. His hood slides back, and I see three black horns protruding out of his head. I can make out a tattoo of a winged snake in between his horns. What kind of creature is that?
‘Demons. The Rebels have demons,’JP answers my unspoken question as another hooded man steps up to the other side of the door.
The two muscle men back up for a running start, and as soon as they reach the door, it swings open and from inside the room, a glowing sword swings up and across, separating their torsos from their legs in a wide arch.
‘HOLY SHIT!’
The man in the doorway is magnificent, he’s wearing red and black clothes which shimmer in the light. His jaw-length light brown hair has a slight curl to it and it seems to flow around his face with power. Along with his dark brown eyes and cocky smirk, he kinda makes my ghostly panties wet. Though I've never seen him before, his voice is so familiar.
“You think I’m that easy to get past, pussycat! Think again, you wretched, foul demons. I’ll make you into my welcome mat.”
My mouth drops open in surprise.‘Oh my lord—it’s Knots in human form.’
“I heard of this but have never seen it. Door Knights are able to leave their station in times of peril. Damn, he’s hot!”JP purrs, and I catch him out of the corner of my eye wiping drool from his mouth.
The Rebels rush Knots and push him back into the dorm, while the two at the door frame pull a jar out of their cloaks and start slathering the wood around the door with the contents. Wrinkling my nose from the stench, I start to cough as it reaches my lungs.
‘That smells a lot like Death Flower and…I am not sure, but some sort of Belladonna mixture,’ JP huffs out as he plugs his nose.
A groan sounds from Knots as the door starts shaking and smoking from the concoction they put on it. A small and fragile figure limps up beside the men in the door frame and begins to chant in another language as a white haze filters out of his hands.
So this is what happened to him.
A roar sounds deep within the dorm, and JP and I float towards the noise. In the middle of the living room, Lynx stands in his tiger form, fighting alongside Knots against the figures flowing into the room. Balls of magic fly and bounce off surfaces, knocking pictures off the walls and destroying anything they hit. With a swipe of his paw, Lynx propels a figure into the wall, leaving a dent in the drywall. Knots' glowing sword carves through the air, deflecting a nasty-looking spell headed towards Lynx. It’s the most intense fight scene I have ever seen—and Lynx and I have seen them all.
Knots, looking paler now but deadly determined, moves with Lynx like they’ve been fighting alongside one another for years, and it occurs to me that they are probably communicating in their heads. A loud sucking noise behind me pulls my eyes away from the pandemonium for a split second. Black wisps of smoke take on the form of hands and flow out of the door with a hiss, arching straight for Knots.
JP reaches out and grabs my hand in solidarity while we both watch as Knots gets sucked back into the door with a scream, leaving Lynx by himself to take on the mass of bodies that now surround him. The last thing I see is four casters firing spells in his direction and one of the cloaked men sneaking up behind him.
NOOOO!
The room fades to black, and I feel my body go boneless as if I’m a ragdoll.
“Rez! What are you doing on the floor? JP? What is going on?” Moni’s shrill voice rouses me. Looking around, I find myself next to JP, both of our bodies slumped against a wall.
“I feel like I’ve been trampled on by a giant,” JP says, shaking his head.
Moni helps me up before reaching for JP and giving us an unrecognizable look.
“Whatever happened, can you sum it up within twenty minutes? I need to change clothes and get to specials,” Moni asks, backing up and heading down to her room.
