She laughed and came over to me, wrapping me in her arms. “Yes you are. I wish I didn’t have to work. We could stay in all day and make messes all over the house.”

“Ay dios mío, woman. Don’t tempt me. Sit down, breakfast is almost ready.”

She sat down and I handed her a cup of coffee. She inhaled the cup and smiled before taking a long sip.

“Delicious. And if you say ‘yes you are,’ so help me!”

“Psychic. But it’s true.” I winked.

I plated our breakfast and brought it over to the island, sitting next to her with my own cup of coffee.

“It smells incredible. Thank you.” She kissed me before digging into her food.

She rolled her eyes and moaned at her first bite and so help me God, I was about to take her again. I didn’t think my need for her was healthy. It was twenty-four seven at this point.

“Oh, before I forget, we should go to the bookstore tomorrow. It’ll be the last time I can go until I get back.”

Her grin had me suspicious. “I think we can do that. Why do you look like you’re up to something, though?”

“Well…. Remember when we went hiking, andsomeonethought it was a good idea to bring out my competitive side? It’s time to pay up, my love. Tomorrow you’re getting all dolled up for a trip to the bookstore.”

“Tomorrow? Oh, shoot. I just remembered I need to repaint my driveway. Another time?” I asked, trying to get out of going to the bookstore. I was very confident she’d lose that bet whenI came up with it. And honestly, I hoped she’d forget about it. Clearly, I underestimated her.

“Nice try. Tomorrow, babe.”

I groaned. I guess we were going to the bookstore tomorrow. Great. “Tomorrow.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

CARA

“Okay, it’s almost perfect. Just one more thing.”

Today was probably one of the best days of my life. When I was younger, I loved playing dress up with my friends. As an adult, there was something so much more special about it.

I’d won the bet when we went hiking, and now I was dressing Vera up. I had to go buy an outfit because she was too muscular for any of the things I owned. I decided to go easy on her and get a plain yellow dress that stopped at her thighs and had spaghetti straps. I didn’t want to freak her out with patterns or glitter or anything, and I paired it with plain brown wedges.

I was nice enough not to make her wear heels, but I was doing her makeup. We slicked her hair back and now she was getting a basic neutral make up look. She grumbled the entire time, but I couldn’t hide my smile.

“Are you enjoying yourself over there?” she asked with a frown.

I nodded, doing a little shimmy in my seat in the kitchen. “Yes. Yes I am. And now I’m done. The outfit is in the bathroom. I want to be surprised, so go put it on and come back out here, okay?”

“Do I have to come back out? Can’t I just stay in here forever?”

I laughed and shook my head. “No, babe. A deal is a deal. Sorry.”

“I don’t think you’re sorry at all.” She sighed and got up from her stool and headed to the bathroom.

I chuckled. I wasn’t sorry. She was the one who made the bet. I sat impatiently waiting for her to get done. I tried to listen for any hint of a reaction, but all I heard was mumbled Spanish. I knew she wasn’t going to like anything I’d picked out, but the fact that she was being such a good sport and doing it anyway meant a lot to me.

I was just about to ask if she needed help when the bathroom door opened and she stepped out on wobbly legs, causing my mouth to go dry and my own legs to become weak.

“Holy shit,” I whispered, biting my lip. I didn’t know what I’d imagined she’d look like when I picked out the dress, but it wasn’t what I saw. I didn’t want to admit it, but seeing her in a dress, with her arms and legs on display, was making me all sorts of turned around. I was getting turned on and I didn’t really know what to make of that realization.

“You know what? Nevermind. You’re not leaving the house like this. Go put on some baggy sweatpants. But not Gray! And a long sleeve shirt.”

She laughed and looked down at herself. “Why? You don’t like it?
