His LT crossed first, Tex’s heavy frame expanding and shifting into a massive, powerful horse, his hooves striking the ground. Right behind him, Bondo’s muscles dense-packed and hardened, his skin graying as he shifted into a towering, armor-plated rhino. Easy moved with lethal, silent grace, blurring into a sleek, powerful cougar, while Shark’s form shifted seamlessly into the terrifying, predatory bulk of a great white.

Twister stepped through, arms extending into the elegant, sweeping wings of a magnificent swan. Dagger followed, his entire silhouette bursting into flames as he ascended into a radiant, burning phoenix. Side by side, Brawler and Beast crossed the line together, their individual identities merging into the synchronized, lethal form of a massive white wolf.

The rescued guard and the rest of the unit pushed forward into the blue-and-gold expanse. Krait’s form lengthened, dropping to the earth as a lethal, low-profile golden snake, while Komodo shifted into a heavily scaled lizard. O-voo’s presence grew monumental, expanding into a giant, earth-shaking elephant, and Bagh brought up the rear, his human shape dissolving into the heavy-muscled, striped lethal perfection of a brilliant Bengal tiger.

The entire unit was through, fully shifted, and standing on a battlefield.

High above the blue and gold expanse, Fly finally took to the air, his powerful wings catching the pristine drafts of the healed Veil. He soared through the stone archway like a lightning bolt, his crimson eyes locking onto the massive array of apex predators fanning out across the terrain.

His speech hit them all simultaneously, a sharp, clear military broadcast running mind-to-mind across their golden bond.

Form up,Fly commanded, banking hard to the left as his shadow swept over the massive shapes of the tiger, the rhino, and the white wolf. The realm is clear, but the target is still out there. Let's move.

He circled higher, and through his bond, Flash sensed him using the absolute tracking clarity of his kite vision to read the geometry of the restored landscape.

Komodo,Fly’s voice rang directly into his mind below. Can you locate North?

Down on the earth, Komodo lifted his flat snout, his nostrils flaring as his tongue flicked out into the crisp, sharp air, tasting the unique energetic signature left behind in the dirt.

Got him,Komodo confirmed, his low, gravelly mental voice locking onto the path with absolute certainty.

Fly banked hard against a sudden updraft, his primary feathers flexing as he swept low over the tree line and flew back toward the front of the column, a living guidewire in the starlit sky.

Take us to him,Fly ordered.

With the directive issued, the entire shifted unit surged forward in a synchronized, lethal rush, tearing into the beautiful, blue-rimmed darkness of the Veil.

The explosive shockwaveof the detonation ripped through the bedrock of the realm, shattering his sanctuary. The roaring wave of deep blue and gold tore through the quiet dark, and with a violent, agonizing wrench, it dragged him back into the light.

The wraith had been drifting. For centuries, he had existed as nothing more than a formless smudge against the ether, safely buried in the absolute mercy of a nameless sleep. He had no identity. He had no history. He was just a fragment of conscious dust floating in the dark, spared from the burden of existing.

Awareness returned not as a gift, but as an execution.

He was instantly crushed under a mountain of mental pain so immense it threatened to tear his spectral form to shreds. His physical body was long gone, decayed and forgotten in a reality he could no longer recall. He didn't remember who he had been. He didn't know what horrific thing he had become. There was only the unrelenting agony of being aware again.

Failure, honor lost, deep, timeless, and absolute, carved phantom cuts across his soul, leaving wounds that felt entirely real. The loss was so vivid, so sharp and immediate, that the wraith threw his formless head back and screamed. The sound was a wretched howl born from the aching absence of everything he had ever known.

He didn't want the light. He didn't want the realm. He only wished to die again, to crawl back into the dark, inactive stasis where the pain couldn't find him.

Then, behind his eyes, the chaos stopped.

Out of the blackness of his fractured mind, a face materialized. She appeared with sudden, blinding clarity. Raven-black hair framed a face of quiet nobility, a delicate crown resting upon her brow. Her eyes...those eyes...held him captive. They weren’t simply blue. They carried the impossible depth of twilight over an endless sea, beautiful enough to hurt.

The face was the only anchor he possessed. He had no name for her. He had no memory of her voice, her touch, or where they had lived. There was only the face, and with it, the gaping, agonizing space of her absence. The sheer weight of that longing pressed down on his chest, a terrifying gravity that threatened to drag his newly awakened soul straight into the blackest depths of despair.

Then he heard the ancient one, the Guardian.

You may wish to cease to exist, but there is a requirement. I have need of you.

The wraith recoiled, his spectral form fracturing against the blue-and-gold light of the glade. No! I cannot be anything more. I'm not worthy of a call or mercy. Leave me be!

The Guardian's voice softened, dropping into a tone that seemed to carry the weight of eons. Her face is all you have. Do you wish to see her again?

The wraith cried out, a wretched, desperate sound. He was entirely unable to stop the immediate eagerness that flared within him, or the agonizing ache that pulsed in tandem with the beat of her heart, a rhythm he swore he could suddenly hear echoing from within his own empty, formless chest.

Don't lie to me,the wraith wept, his thoughts thrashing against the vision of the sapphire eyes. She is gone forever.
