The Guardian brushed the despair off with effortless ease. There is only one thing that is forever, and that is love.
The sheer musical beauty of the word was like a song that tantalized and seduced, vibrating through the cold vacuum of the wraith's existence. He recoiled violently from the sound, the tearing agony of his loss rolling over him in waves so heavy, so punishing, that his thoughts scattered like dust in a gale.
Be my emissary outside, in Reality. The war has just begun, the Guardian commanded, the words anchoring the wraith's drifting consciousness.I have need of you. Build a bridge to my Shadowguard.
The wraith gasped, choked by an overwhelming desire to see that face again, to truly know that face, and to violently take back all that had been torn from him. But his hope had long since vanished into the dark.
If you have need of me, I will serve, the wraith whispered, his form stabilizing into a rigid, defensive knot of shadow. But don't tempt me with lost dreams. All of it has turned to ash.
Behind the Veil of the waking world, the Guardian smiled. We shall see,he murmured.

North knewthe instant the Veil opened, the exact moment his teammates stepped through. He felt them through the golden threads of brotherhood, his tether to his own body degradingmore and more with every passing second that he remained formless and detached within the Veil.
Below him, a mournful dirge exploded from the center of the castle. Chaos’s slaves had broken and destroyed three of the four inner wards. The ageless entity was terrifyingly close to freedom, the death of everything churning violently in its heart, holding the power of worlds and universes right at its fingertips.
North was so utterly exposed that he could see, feel, and know the horrifying truth about Chaos. He had restructured his assassins, escalating their power into something catastrophic. He watched the entities mutate in real-time.
Rupture, the Breaking Foundation, had been forged into Avalanche. The assassin had evolved from causing targeted structural failures to creating cascading, unstoppable destruction.
Null, the Collapse of Meaning, had shifted into Void. Its attack had upgraded from breaking a single mind to completely breaking the meaning of the world its target inhabited.
Severance, the Fracture of Connection, had transformed into Doom, the ultimate expression of Chaos's philosophy. It no longer simply disrupted bonds. It actively weaponized them to ensure a final, inescapable outcome. It was a pure engine of fatalism.
Finally, Vertigo, the Loss of Bearing, had become Maelstrom. Where Vertigo had once unbalanced a target in a single pulse, Maelstrom’s disorientation was permanent and total as long as it lived, turning the entire battlefield into a churning whirlpool of unmoored space.
Chaos released them all. They didn’t hunt as corporeal beings this time, but as immortal, colossal Veil monstrosities, hurtling straight at the oncoming team.
Desperate to protect his brothers, North threw his voice into the ether. Even as he gathered his energy into the great plainsherd, he screamed everything he knew down the brotherhood bond, broadcasting the horrific data profiles of the four mutated assassins, and prayed to the Great Spirit that it would be enough.

North's warninghit the brotherhood bond with enough force to stagger Fly in mid-flight.
Fly banked hard above the tree line, his kite vision sweeping the rebuilt realm. The castle sat ahead, black against the stars, but movement erupted from its foundations.
The four assassins came at them together, and the ground broke first.
A low groan rolled through the Veil and spread outward in widening fractures. Trees split. Stone shattered. Entire sections of earth collapsed into themselves as Avalanche thundered down the slope like a living landslide.
At the same time, the sky twisted and Fly lost the horizon. One second he was banking left. The next, every direction changed. The stars spun. The terrain folded. His stomach dropped as the world lost all orientation.
Maelstrom.
Left.North’s steady voice penetrated the disorientation. Fly trusted it without hesitation and rolled hard. The world shifted again.Climb.He climbed. The spinning eased for half a heartbeat.Hover.Fly held.
The horizon snapped back into place long enough for him to see Bondo plant himself in the middle of the chaos. The massive rhino dug his broad, padded digits into the earth and lowered his horn. Around him, the team reoriented. The impossible pull of Maelstrom dragged at them, but Bondo held the line like a mountain.
Anchor on Bondo, Fly ordered. The team adjusted immediately.
Easy flowed low and fast through the grass. Shark cut a wide arc. Twister swept overhead. Dagger burst upward in a plume of fire.
Maelstrom howled. The pull intensified. North's voice cut through it.Straight ahead.
Bondo charged and the others followed. The assassin tried to drag them apart, but the team moved tighter.
It tried to twist the battlefield. North fed them bearings faster than it could corrupt them.
