The doorbell rang.
Haz started forward, but both of us made a sound while Kieran snatched him back. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
“Answering the door.”
“No,” we said at once.
“But that’s usually what people do when someone rings the bell.”
“Were you expecting someone?” Kieran asked.
“No,” Haz said, and then worry clouded his face.
“Stay here with Ghost,” Kieran said, pushing Haz toward me.
“But—” Haz started, but the look Kieran gave him had the words dying on his tongue.
I dropped my arm around his shoulder and pulled out the knife I kept tucked away.
“Do you think it’s Tommy?” Haz whispered.
“How quickly you forget that people were trying to killyouuntil yesterday.”
He stiffened.
Kieran grunted, pulled back from the peephole, and reached for the door. He did not put away his gun.
“Who is it?” Haz worried.
The door opened but blocked our view of whoever was standing on the other side.
“What are you doing here?” Kieran asked, his voice cold.
“I’d like to see my nephew.”
Haz made a sound and pulled away from me to rush toward the door as it was pushed back to reveal Enzo Salvatore, mob boss extraordinaire.
He was a tall man with an athletic build. He clearly worked out, but he didn’t look overly muscled. His dark-brown hair was buzzed short on the sides but long on top and combed away from his forehead. Probably with gel. He looked like he was slick. You know what I’m saying? He was dressed in black dress pants, a black button-down, and a black jacket with fine red pinstripes.
The open collar of his shirt exposed the tattoos covering his neck, an aesthetic that matched his tattooed hands.
His discerning gaze went right to Haz, sweeping over him from head to toe as if assuring himself his newest family member was unharmed. “Hazier,” he said.
“I told you to call me Haz, Uncle Enzo.”
“And I told you not to call me uncle.”
Good luck with that.Haz listened as well as Pip, which was not at all.
“What do you want?” Kieran asked after shutting the door.
Enzo glanced around and cocked a brow. “Do you always answer the door with a gun?”
“Don’t you?” Kieran countered.
“I don’t need to.”
“Big heads like that make an easy target,” I observed.
