She chuckles softly. “Of course, I do. My heart has always belonged to you. Even through everything, it’s always been you, J.”

I kiss her, unable to control myself. It’s not heated or hurried. It’s filled with love and yearning being poured back into her.

When we finally break apart, I stand from the couch, telling her I’ll be right back. I return with a warm, damp washcloth and run the material between her thighs. It’s something I should’ve done earlier, but the moment wasn’t right. There was too much we needed to say. She moans as the washcloth grazes her still sensitive bud, and I fight the urge to wrap my lips around it. There will be more time for that, but right now, I need to clean my girl up so she can rest.

Today has been a lot, and I can see the fatigue weighing down her eyelids. When I’m content she’s refreshed, I press a gentle kiss to the inside of her thigh before tossing the cloth onto the table and climbing back onto the couch beside her. Her body curls into mine and we lie there in silence. No more words left to say, she rests herself against me, releasing some of her pain into me, and I welcome the heavy load.

I feel her deep breath as if it’s the first time she’s allowed herself to fully breathe.

She’s safe.

And I’ll kill anyone who threatens that.

Chapter 37

Wren

Isitatmymom’sdesk, pen in hand, as I stare at the screen in front of me. I’m supposed to be finalizing the event schedule for this fall, which will be the last fall of Hannah’s Haven as I prepare to open my event venue. The remodeling of the old barn is running on track, which alleviates some of the stress weighing on my shoulders. I swear, if it’s not one thing–like running and starting a new business, it’s another—like dealing with an unhinged ex-fiancé.

My mind won’t settle. It’s been a few days since the group therapy session, and I feel less burdened by my life in California. Finally voicing what happened to me was everything I didn’t know I needed. The only thing left to do is tell my family, which needs to happen sooner rather than later, especially now with everything going on.

The silence in the office presses in. There’s no commotion in the shop below me, which only adds to my racing mind. The days when I’m in the office, my Silo Bay assigned officer–or my “babysitter”—are more lax since the farm is always bustling with farmhands who notice visitors. If Elias is creeping around, one of them would notice. It’s why the blacked-out SUV doesn’t follow me up the drive; instead, he heads into town once I’ve turned into the gravel lane.

As I sit here and pretend to work, all I can think about is Jett. We’re officially dating again and it seems so high school to call him my boyfriend, but that’s what he is. Boyfriend. Itfeels foreign on my tongue, but I also want to shout it from the rooftop. I so badly want to make a post in The Bay Buzz to shut everyone up with their small-town gossip and speculations.

A slow smile pulls at my lips before I can stop it. I should stay here and work. I really should. But following the rules hasn’t always been a high priority for me.

I close the laptop screen and push away from the desk. I need to see him, even though it’s only been a few hours. I’m addicted. This overwhelming need to crawl into his skin so I can be closer to him.

I grab my keys and head out to my new SUV. A few days ago, I finally bit the bullet and got my own car. As much as I loved driving Dad’s old truck around, I needed something that was mine…and a little more reliable. Another benefit is that this Honda is popular in Silo Bay, meaning I can blend in a little more than Dad’s unique truck.
