I grip the wheel as I drive a few miles down the road, nerves buzzing under my skin in a way that has nothing to do with fear, for once. It’s excitement, anticipation, and a feeling of being alive.

By the time I turn down the gravel lane leading to the farm’s headquarters, my pulse is racing because, as much as I want to see Jett, there’s another reason I’m surprising him in the middle of the day. Dust kicks up behind me as I park and step out. I fidget with my skirt as I walk toward the main barn at Riggsby Cattle.

“Can I help you?” I turn at the voice and find a farmhand.

“Hi, I’m looking for Jett.”

He glances around nervously. “Do you have an appointment?”

I shake my head. “Oh, is he busy? I’m his girlfriend and wanted to swing by for a second.”

His eyes nearly bug out of his head. “I am so sorry. I’m new here and didn’t realize.” He fumbles over his words. “He’s in barn two. Would you like for me toshow you the way?”

“I know where it’s at. Thank you.”

He apologizes again, and I reassure him that everything’s fine. I walk the few minutes to barn two and can’t help but admire the property. Multiple barns take up residence at Riggsby Cattle, all sided blue with white metal roofs to match their signature look. The barns have two overhangs on each side and a wide double wood door on the end.

I walk through the open entrance and scan the barn. A few pens are constructed out of metal gates as spring-born babies lay down in their beds of straw. Their white faces and reddish-brown bodies call for me to crawl in the pen and pet them. Cows are basically big dogs, and I won’t hear otherwise.

“Whiskey? Well, isn’t this a surprise,” Jett calls from deeper in the barn.

“I was missing you.”

“Words I love to hear.” Jett smirks as he pulls me in for a hug, pressing a kiss on the top of my head.

A throat clears, and I turn to look at the teen standing next to Jett. He looks familiar, but I can’t quite place him.

“Wren, this is Dylan. He’s going to be helping out around here.”

The name clicks. He’s the same teen from group therapy. Jett’s talked about him a time or two.

I smile under Jett’s arm since he hasn’t let me go. “Nice to meet you.”

Dylan dips his head. “You too.”

“You’ll love working for Riggsby Cattle. If the boss gives you a hard time, let me know.”

He huffs a quiet laugh as Jett shakes his head. “I’ll get started cleaning out barn four.”

“Sounds good.” Jett nods. “I’ll be out in a bit.”

The door closes behind him, and silence settles around us as the cows rustle in their pens. Jett tugs me deeper into his side until my chest is against his. Our eyes meet as curiosity flickers beneath the surface.

“What’re you doing here, Whiskey?” His words are low, gruff.

I don’t answer. Instead, I press up onto my toes and place a gentle kiss against his sharp jaw. A low growl sounds deep in his throat as his hand slides lower, gripping my ass through my skirt.

“I told you,” I whisper against his neck. “I missed you.”

His gaze drags over me, like he’s taking his time committing this moment to memory. Well, maybe he is. Could make good spank bank material.

My stomach pools with desire and this overwhelming need to please him. I drag my hand down his front, trailing over every dip and valley of his abdominal muscles as I slowly sink to my knees.

“Whiskey, baby,” Jett grits out. “Not here.”

I look at him through my lashes and nod. “Right here.”

“But your knees,” he argues.
